After being unsuccessful in their attempts to trade Richard Matvichuk over the last four weeks, the Devils placed the 34-year-old defenseman on waivers today. If he is not claimed by another team before today’s noon deadline, he will be assigned to Lowell of the AHL with little chance of being called back up.
Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello believes there is a possibility that Matvichuk will be claimed.
“There were teams interested, but we couldn’t get a deal done, so this will give them an opportunity to pick him up without any compensation,” he said.
Matvichuk's $1.368 million salary might scare teams off, though, Matvichuck said he would report to Lowell if sent there, but is hoping that another team will give him a chance to play in the NHL. “I’m just going to have to wait to see what happens,” he said.
Matvichuk has been working out on his own in New Jersey since Lamoriello told him on Oct. 10 that he would try to trade him. He said Lamoriello told him this morning that he would be placed on waivers.
You have got to be kidding me. What is wrong with Lou???? This guy was our #1 defense man last playoffs. He had more ice time than rafalski most games. He actually plays physical and checks. He is not a pansy like our D men are now. Lou is a moron. Sutter needs to be fired. Let Johnny Mac take over !!!

I have to agree with jdr30. Sutter is making mistakes and Lou is compounding them.

why don't you two relax and let the season unfold, I think most who know hockey would agree that Matvichuk if playing would not be making that much of a difference, the Devils biggest problem right now is scoring plain and simple

Matvichuk is so valued around the league that nobody was willing to even trade a 7th round draft pick for him. That is pretty telling.
