JohnnyB

We miss you, Marty!

Thanks TG for the best updates!

JD

Interesting....I saw Marty at the Ice House in Hackensack on Saturday and he was not wearing a brace and said he feels much better at this point then he thought he would.

GG

"but still has to wear a brace on his arm -- except for when he showers or is doing his rehab, which has been minimal."

He must STINK if he has only showered minimally since his surgery.

mikeschoenf

JD.. anything else???

Vishal

OMG heroic comeback in January!!! haha just kidding.

Vishal

GG he means the rehab has been minimal fool :P

SonicDude

let's not confuse the logjam on defense with a good defense. we are average, not more.

lots of teams looking for d-men, and to me mottau and greene are perfect trade bait. mottau's solid play of late makes him valuable, while greene is a puck mover.

i would try to put together a big trade now. use these 2 guys, plus a prospect or 2.

we went into the summer needing 2 d-men and 2 forwards. we got bryce and rolston. now we need a top pairing d-man and a no. 1 center. i know how hard that will be, but lou needs to think big before marty retires. so try to put a trade together to fill at least one of these needs.

this team is not beating detroit or san jose if we somehow reach the finals. i know i am getting way ahead of myself but the point is that those 2 teams are the standard, so lou needs to strucutre the team to beat them, esp. with marty's clock ticking.

Pearl Jammed

I personally like our D the way it stands now, and really it only gets better once Greene comes back. I think this team has enough tools to beat the big teams once marty gets back, and furthermore i think this team i should still be able to compete with the big guys once Rolston and Holik comeback. This team has kept it respectable since losing the best goalie of all time, lets not all lose sight of that. most people would have predicted this team to be a MINIMUM of 5 games under .500 without Brodeur, and we have done alright so far!

Pearl Jammed

BTW... some of the readers here should really check out some of the Records other sports blogs. I personally recommend Pinstripe Posts(i am a yankee fan afterall) Pete Caldera is just as active with the posts as TG is, and he also offers his opinion just like TG. Just throwing it out there, after all the links are right there on the left hand side of the screen!

DS

TG, did you have a chance to ask him about his mask and if he'll switch back to his old? After all....since he switched, this whole hell started. And yeah....I'm superstitious. :)

Jeff

Glad to hear Marty is feeling better and starting his long road back by taking a few baby steps.

modnarm

i just hope all goes well with the rehab. I see how slow he has to take it now.. compared to in just 3 months throwing his arm out so fast. - gets me worried.

mikeschoenf

i just want to hear your opinions on Oduya's contract situation for next year.. i really dont want to loose him before his full potential is reached.. not sure if we will get a home town discount but im thinking 4 years 14 million. any thoughts?

JJ

@Sonic - Unfortunately there's not nearly enough cap room for a #1 D AND a #1 C. If I had to choose I'll take the D anytime. The real question is why would anyone take guys like Mottau & Greene in a deal for a top anything unless you throw in a superstar prospect (which we don't have)? You can't just throw a pile of averageness at someone and expect them to be happy with quantity over quality. Any team looking to deal a big D is going to want to start with promising young NHL players who are under contract at reasonable rates and all of the ones we have are producing for us and we need.

JD

"JD.. anything else???"

Sorry, I really did not want to bother him much, his son was playing in a hockey tournament and a lot of kids went up asking for autographs after the game. Amazingly though not a single person went up to him during the game as the people in attendance respected his privacy while his son was playing. Pretty classy if you ask me.

Tom Gulitti

Is it possible that Brodeur had a jacket on over his brace? I was looking at it today and it's actually kind of lightweight and small. A big jacket sleeve would definitely fit over it.

And, yes, I meant the rehab has been minimal, not the showering.

mikeschoenf

JD.. thanks.... yeah that is pretty classy. he enjoys not being bothered as per his book. .which is a main reason he stayed with us for all these years!

MoonDragn

Sonicdude, I bet if we had Stamkos as a rookie you would still trade him for that #1 D...

Stamkos is not doing any better than Greene was before he got injured.

In fact he's at -10 while Greene is at +4 and only 4 more points with more points played and he's a forward.

You can't blame it on him playing on the 4th line either, because Greene didn't exactly get alot of minutes either.

So how about we give some time for our rookies to develop before trading them off?

I realize Greene is no longer a rookie but he's only got about 1.5 years of experience in the NHL.

Keith

mikeschoenf 4 years 14 million! are you crazy. oduya is not worth that at all. thats more than zach makes but lou knows he got zach at such a discount. i like our defense and they do get the job done but theres just like 4 maybe 5 just mediocre guys. we really need a top pair defensemen and a top line center. i personally think colin white is the worst defensemen out of all of them (well now brookbank is off the fourth line and back to playing d so he is the worst but...)

Pearl Jammed

Mikeschoenf, i think that may be a bargain but i think he would settle for 4 years at 12 million(basically 3 million a year)... and a case of Clammato Juice because he is all Vamp now with Twilight coming out... just kidding i love Orrduya

Pearl Jammed

i really don't think he is that off base. Oduya has definitely made strides in the last year or 2 and has become a pretty steady player with decent offensive insticts. He just doesn't have the big shot from the point but i think at 2.5-3 million a season he would be a steal in the 3rd year of that deal. Lets remember it takes Defensemen twice as long as a forward to get adjusted to the NHL game(usually there are always exceptions that get it right away)

SonicDude

@ditti

sorry, dont agree. i think this team is structured, at best, and with marty, to win 1 playoff round. that's all.

@jj

my implication for a big trade, altho admittedly not obvious from my post, was to add to that package one of our best chips, say oduya, martin or corrente to land a top player. b/c if you're right about salmela, then we dont need oduya and martin. and my sights are set big, like trying to pry kovalchuk or lecavalier.

Josh

Hey TG ... Thanks for the update on marty ... i sent u an E mail a while ago ... wondering if u got it?

michael jackson

Brodeur is of course the best goalie we have but, him being out right now is the best thing that could happen to the team. I'd rather enter the playoffs in the 8th seat and be ready then to win fake easy games all year land a top seat and than lose to some lame team.

JJ

@Keith - Zach was an RFA (albeit a 1st round pick and budding star), Oduya is a UFA - HUGE difference in negotiating power (Zach will get a top 10% of the league contract as a UFA - think $7M/5+ yrs). A proven top 4 defenseman with a Devils pedigree like Oduya will get some decent offers if he ends up on the open market. Pearl Jammed is right on target IMO. Probably a similar contract to Salvador's, maybe more $/yr or more years because of his age.
