Devils left wing Zach Parise needs three more shots on goal to break John MacLean's single-season team record.
MacLean took 322 shots on goal in 1989-90. Parise, who leads the Devils with a career-high 41 goals, has registered 320 shots so far this season with nine games remaining.
The top four single-season shots totals in Devils' history.
John MacLean 1989-90 -- 322
Zach Parise 2008-09 -- 320
Claude Lemieux 1992-93 -- 311
Patrik Elias 2003-04 --300
How many shots did Gionta have on net when he scored 48?
Posted by: Jacko | March 26, 2009 at 09:15 AM
There's a lesson there for the players who'd rather pass the puck than shoot it. No coincidence that the players who make the most shots, have the highest number of goals and/or assists.
Like the wise man said, you miss 100% of the shots you DON'T take!

As a "stats guy", I have to say I have no idea why this stat is even tracked other than to calculate shooting %.
Posted by: Jason | March 26, 2009 at 09:20 AM
Go Zach...no coincidence all those players were high scorers. Gotta shoot guys!
Posted by: Scratch20 | March 26, 2009 at 09:20 AM
I wonder what the shot accuracy was for all those players compared to this season for zach against those seasons.
Posted by: MoonDragn | March 26, 2009 at 09:26 AM
Zach attack, Zach attack!
Posted by: Jaco | March 26, 2009 at 09:29 AM
Of players with over 200 shots, the mean shooting % is 11.5, and of the top performers, only Zach and Jeff Carter have taken > 300 shots. So i doubt the correlation is with more shots = more goals. I think it has more to do with the fact that better players get more ice time, get more shots, and get more goals.
Posted by: Jason | March 26, 2009 at 09:32 AM
The more impressive stat is that even with all those shots, Zach still manages to have an almost equal amount of assists. Not just this year, for his entire career to date. Sometimes a high number of shots can be an indication of a selfish player, definitely not the case with Zach. As I always say, Zach work hard, "Zach score-easy".
Posted by: devilstown | March 26, 2009 at 09:42 AM
BTW, the correlation of shots to goals is 0.59, which puts it right on the cusp of being somewhat correlated, but certainly not enough to make a call one way or another.
Posted by: Jason | March 26, 2009 at 09:42 AM
And that was only for players taking > 200 shots, so that makes the relationship even less impressive.
Posted by: Jason | March 26, 2009 at 09:47 AM
Jason, not quite right, the league leader in goals with 51, Ovechkin, has taken an overwhelming 475 shots so far this year. So the 3 top scorers also have the most shots on net, you can't deny the corrolation. Granted they are given more ice time and thus more opportunities to take those shots, but the chances of getting a goal if you're not putting pucks on net = 0. perhaps if other players shot on net more often and started getting more goals they may also start to get more ice time and hence more opportunities. It's a catch 22 as long as the accuracy is there.

Ovechkin has a chance to break the NHL record for shots in a season this year.
John MacLean was the perfect example of a guy who scored goals because he shot the puck whenever he had the chance.
Gionta had 291 shots in 2005-06 when he scored 48 goals.
Posted by: TG | March 26, 2009 at 10:02 AM
The web has Gionta listed as taking 291 shots in his 48 goal season.
Posted by: devilstown | March 26, 2009 at 10:04 AM
Phil Esposito set the NHL record with 550 shots on goal in 1970-71. Ovechkin has some work to do to get to that number. It looks like he'll fall short, but you never know.

Speaking of shots, maybe Zubrus could take a few more. He's no Koslov, but still, fire that biscuit bro.

for those of you who were complaining about Sutter giving the team a few days off and demanding punishment practices, read this article and see why Sutter may win the jack adams trophy this year. this is the difference between last years Brent and this years Brent: http://www.nj.com/devils/index.ssf/2009/03/why_the_mini_vacation_coach_br.html
(sorry to post a link to your competition TG, just needed some support to backup my opinion that Sutter is making the right move)

Of course more shots = more goals it'd be silly to argue otherwise but Jason has a great point.
Gionta had 291 shots the year he scored 48 for a 16.5% spct and avg'd 19:49 min/game. This year he's only at 8.2% despite playing 16:58 min/game.
Ovechkin is averaging 22:55 mins/game. That's 2:00 more per game than any Devils DEFENSEMAN not named Paul Martin (24:20/game).
Not to get too wonky but THE stat to look at here is PROD. Which as many of you already know calculates how many minutes of ice time it takes a player to score a point (or a player scores a point every X min). Of the top five scoring leaders their PROD is; Parise: 15:30, Datsyuk: 15:46, Malkin: 16:02, Crosby: 16:10, Ovechkin: 17:11.

Posted by: Zorin | March 26, 2009 at 10:17 AM
I know, I hate these multiple off days after losses. I couldn't go to the Minnesota game, the Boston game was over early and my d@mn cable box & modem went down for the Philly game and stupid Cablevision requires a box to get Vs (first time I missed a game completely since '97! AAAARRRRGH F*&#%^* @$$ face DOLAN I HATE YOU!!!!) Help me, I'm pale, sweaty and shaking over here. Gimme my DEVILS!!!!
Posted by: JJ | March 26, 2009 at 10:28 AM
I can't wait for Friday's game. Can't wait to see the team all new and shiny and refreshed. 3 days without Devils I start going into withdrawal
Posted by: Scratch20 | March 26, 2009 at 10:29 AM
JJ, I'd have been happy not to have my cable working for the Philly game. I couldn't turn it off!! I'd turn it off and then come back 2 seconds later. Though I do hate the VSHD broadcast, it gets very choppy in my area.
Lets hope they play better tomorrow.

I can't even switch to FIOS cuz they don't offer it yet in my complex, not enough requests for it yet and we can't put dishes up. :(
Posted by: JJ | March 26, 2009 at 10:55 AM
That is not cool! I don't have fios either, we have optimum online. I had dish network during the 03 cup finals and game 3 was hurricane like weather and I barely was able to see the game. We had to all run to a friends house to watch. You'll just need to mass email them with different accounts asking for fios so that they install it :)

just out of curiosity, where do you guys live that you have so much troble with TV broadcasts of the games? are you out of this area? I see people posting complaints all the time, just curious where everyone is...
