The Devils acquired center Ben Walter and a conditional draft pick in 2012 from the New York Islanders today in exchange for the rights to center Tony Romano. Walter, 25, is the son of former NHL center Ryan Walter, who won a Stanley Cup with Montreal in 1986. Ben Walter had 20 goals and 30 assists for 50 points and 10 penalty minutes in 65 games in 2008-09 with Bridgeport of the AHL. He had no points or penalty minutes in four NHL games with the Islanders last season. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound native of Beaconsfield, Quebec was Boston's fifth pick, 160th overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. He has one goal, no assists and four penalty minutes in 22 career NHL games with Boston and the Islanders. The Devils selected Romano, 21, in the sixth round, 178th overall, in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound native of Smithtown, N.Y. had 36 goals and 33 assists in 65 games with Peterborough of the OHL in 2008-09. It's kind of a strange coincidence that two players from Smithtown were traded within minutes of each other. Christopher Higgins, who is also from Smithtown, was traded to the Rangers in the deal that sent Scott Gomez to Montreal today.
Gomez to Montreal for Higgins is done.

This guy has but up decent minor league numbers, but at 25, he doesn't seem like much of a prospect. Meet our new #2 center :(
Posted by: NJSwampdragon | June 30, 2009 at 05:38 PM
Ben Walter, C, 6'1, 195 pounds... a little old for AHL at 25, but put up good numbers. Maybe this is our 4th line center?

This is a Devils blog. Let's not bother mentioning players from inferior neighboring teams.
Ben Walter's stats:

A solid AHLer, who has gotten a few games in the NHL with the Isles over the last few seasons.

Just out of curiosity what's Walter's contract look like?
Posted by: Pete | June 30, 2009 at 05:42 PM
Ben Walter
ASSETS: Owns a projectable frame, two-way skills and center savvy. Does not hurt his team when not in possession of the puck.
FLAWS: Needs to do a better job of utilizing his frame to maximize his potential at the center position. Isn't a natural goal-scorer.
CAREER POTENTIAL: Fourth line center.

Total NHL 22 1 0 1 -1
Total AHL 268 80 143 223 25

Decent AHL numbers, a depth aquisition in preparation for Lowell losing a couple guys to the big club?
Posted by: Neil S | June 30, 2009 at 05:45 PM
come on Josh at least give credit to thye site you got that from

Thus far, it like Pelley and Walter will be battling it out for 4th line center duties.
Posted by: Puckster | June 30, 2009 at 05:49 PM
Whoa I just read some more of the comments, first of all, this is NOT a new number 2 center, and second, there is no such thing as "too old for the AHL."
Posted by: Neil S | June 30, 2009 at 05:49 PM
This guy aint gunna be playing anytime soon in Newark. Didnt we also get Spiller last year from the Isles?
Posted by: Rickym2 | June 30, 2009 at 05:51 PM
Lol im sure the number 2 center comment was a joke about our sad state of 2nd line center options.

Decent numbers in AHL. I want a big name by the end of the day/night Wed. to go along with our guy's. Were due for a big name & it will be good for ticket sales! Let's role the dice Lou.

Here's Rupp/Madddog's replacement. Bye bye.
Posted by: Andrew | June 30, 2009 at 05:55 PM
I;ve seen this guy play a bunch of times, he is Solid. Not as good as some of their other prospects, but decent.
Posted by: Jason | June 30, 2009 at 05:56 PM
Depth player, can only help. Hey TG is there any word on if Lou has tried signing that McIntyre kid who we got from Anaheim in exchange for Brookbank?

Completely off topic, but I read that Grace Sutter was battling breast cancer throughout last season. Granted I have terrible memory, but I really don't remember hearing that anywhere. In addition Sutter definitely didn't talk about that. I'm just wondering if this is old news, or if it was just kept quiet. After hearing that, I'd have to say Sutter doesn't deserve the hardcore hate he's been taking, although I still think it's a little messed up he's coaching next season.

Yes, sarcasm is a difficult thing to grasp. #2 center
If a guy is in the AHL and over 25, he really isn't considered an NHL prospect any more. Some guys might make it, like Mottaeu, but that is rare.
Posted by: NJSwampdragon | June 30, 2009 at 05:59 PM
Romano was a overage OHLer so don't be too impressed with the numbers.
Posted by: NJSwampdragon | June 30, 2009 at 06:01 PM
doesn't look like Koivu is stayin in Montreal with the Gomez signing. I hope we can get Lang...
come on.. Zubrus, or Lang (who played half a season last year).. i'd take LANG!

TG,
NHL.com is reporting that the "future considerations" is a conditional pick in 2012 coming back our way.
