It's official: Shanahan re-signs with Devils for one year, $1 million

As I first reported earlier today, Brendan Shanahan will be back with the Devils for the 2009-10 season.

The Devils just announced that they have re-signed the 40-year-old left wing and he will be returning for a 22nd NHL season. It's a one-year contract for $1 million.

Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said Shanahan's experience will be helpful to the young players he hopes to have on the team in the upcoming season, but that's not his only asset.

"What he brings is he has the experience you have to have to win," Lamoriello said. "He's played in all situations and he's willing to share that experience with the younger players. But the most important thing is he can still play and contribute in different roles."

Part of the reason for the delay before signing Shanahan was that Lamoriello wanted to be sure that Shanahan was comfortable returning to the Devils and the role he would have under new head coach Jacques Lemaire. Shanahan and Lemaire met on Monday in New Jersey to make sure both were on the same page before the signing was completed.

"That was as important as anything, that not only he, but Jacques Lemaire was on board with it," Lamoriello said.

Unlike last season, Shanahan will have a full training camp with the team. Lamoriello also pointed out that the Olympic break would beneficial to Shanahan.

As for giving Shanahan days off during the season -- as Brent Sutter did at times last season, Lamoriello said, "That will be the coach's decision."

When I asked Lamoriello if he planned to add any more players before training camp opens on Sept. 12, he replied, "We'll see."

Would love to hear lemaire speak on some of his plans for players or ideas oftheir use, positions.
how do you see shanny being used.. Some spot play on 2nd line, but steady spot on 4th, 2nd pp unit, maybe some PK?

Lemaire should not say a word to the media or fans of how he is going to use players. How can he say that without seeing how players react to his cahnges or system when there has not even been one practice.

Prior to Lemaire taking the job, lou gave him tapes of the team to watch so he better understood the roster. So I am sure he has an idea of where he would like to use players or how. Lou also said that shanny returning was first up to lemaire, so I wouldn't mind hearing what he has to say. We have a glut of wings on the team, so someone will be playing out of position. Do you agree? My main focus as a fan has been to let the kids play and resign shanny to help them along. Well half is done, I just wanna see the other part come true now

I'm going to have to keep those "signs" to myself (secrets of the job), but, I'll just say that though the deal wasn't "done" last week, it was all but. It was more a matter of timing than agreeing.

Over/Under $1M? I'm gonna go with just under. I know most of you are thinking 1.2, etc. but I just can't see that big of a raise from last year's pro-rated mini season. It does hurt my thought, however, that multiple teams were interested.

Zorin that is a great point. I got screwed on my morrison jersey, and vowed never to buy another jersey with a players name. So I changed the name plate to my name and now only buy jerseys with my fav player #. And my name on it. Win win

I bought my Elias jersey a year before the lockout. The year after the lockout, he goes up for free agency and I was so worried that Patty would be a goner and my jersey would be obsolete. Luckily Patty stayed with us and a jersey crisis was averted. I always look to see how many years a player has left on his deal before I buy a jersey so I don't get caught up in that mess ever again. That's why I'm going hold off on buying a Parise jersey until we know his future.

He went to the same store he bought the Gomez jersey from and had the nameplate replaced... I think it cost $50. I think the store is in woodbridge mall... the owner there said Parise bought like 50 jerseys of himself from there... this was back during his rookie year.
