Defensemen Jay Leach and Rob Davison and center Tim Sestito all cleared waivers and were assigned to Lowell of the AHL today.
Davison and Sestito are both on two-way contracts with AHL salaries of less than $105,000, so the Devils will be able to call them up without putting them through re-entry waivers.
Leach's AHL salary is more than $105,000, so he would have to go through re-entry waivers to be called back up. That makes it unlikely that he will play in the NHL this season.
lol shortest post ever. anyway i guess that is good that leach cleared so we have even more depth at d.

TG, 1/2 hour until all teams have to announce their 23-man roster. Any word on whether PLx3, PikkaChu or Halishuck made the roster?
Posted by: mikeP | September 30, 2009 at 02:24 PM
TG, do you know how serious Bergfors' shoulder problems are. Will he ever be able to play any type of psychical game, or no? Chere's article made it sound like he was made of glass, and you also have brought up his shoulder issues.

No word on the rest of the roster, yet. They have to be down to 23 players by 3 p.m. Whether they announce their roster at that time, remains to be seen.

Pitt picked up bourque from Wash.

Bergfors said a week or two ago that he has to be aware of his shoulder because of the injury had two seasons ago. I think that's a maintenance thing and also not doing anything stupid like trying to make unnecessary hits.
That's a different type of physical game that was I was talking about earlier. I think he can still compete more consistently in the corners and in front of the net without re-injuring his shoulder. If he can't, then that's a problem.

Thanks, TG. I hope so. I'm just worried he might be really soft, in part because of his injury.

It looks like the Devils might place Pandolfo or Pikkarainen on IR to start the season to keep from making any other cuts today.
Posted by: TG | September 30, 2009 at 02:34 PM
Another stupid question... what's the deal with an "emergency call-up"? Would the player have to pass thru reentry waivers? I'm having problems even figuring out what conditions have to be met to use that.
Posted by: Number6 | September 30, 2009 at 02:36 PM
Can you just randomly place someone on IR? Don't they have to be, ya know, injured?
Posted by: iamtheprodigy | September 30, 2009 at 02:38 PM
Doesn't putting Pando or Pikka on IR just delay the inevitable?
Posted by: Mike O. | September 30, 2009 at 02:39 PM
Pikkarainen is suffering from a lack of NHL skills and Pandolfo with washed up NHL'er syndrome.

I'm still curious about Lou's comment of "changes are coming"...
Posted by: Rusty | September 30, 2009 at 02:41 PM
Well, Pandolfo has some kind of leg injury that kept him out and Pikkarainen was ill and isn't ready to play.
But, yes, it does delay the inevitable. It also buys a little time, though, especially if you have to send someone down who has to clear waivers and can't be recalled after that.
Suppose Pandolfo and/or Pikka need a week to be ready and then someone else is injured.
Posted by: TG | September 30, 2009 at 02:41 PM
True....I guess I'm just unaware of the extent of both of their "injuries"

ESPN is reporting Gionta is the leading candidate for the captaincy in Montreal.
Posted by: Pat | September 30, 2009 at 02:51 PM
Better him than Gome$.
Posted by: iamtheprodigy | September 30, 2009 at 02:55 PM
wouldn't surprise me. They always seem to have someone injured, might as well keep an extra guy up.
Posted by: MoonDragn | September 30, 2009 at 02:59 PM
Smart move to put Pando or Pikka on IR. Because that buys them at least a few days so they can see who got cut from other teams over the next couple of days and maybe upgrade a few of the boarderline players or gives them a little more time to make a trade. That way they don't have to put those boarderline players on waivers just yet and risk losing them for nothing until they figure out how to upgrade, either through trade or scoop up someone who was cut by another team. Sounds like they are still a bit unsure of their D situation and want an upgrade there yet don't have any solutions yet. I agree with TP that this will probably be their move.

...or they're gonna make a trade....
Posted by: rob | September 30, 2009 at 03:05 PM
that's what I said
Posted by: jerry | September 30, 2009 at 03:08 PM
so PLx3 and Halischuk both made the roster? good news
Posted by: mikeP | September 30, 2009 at 03:11 PM
sorry, didn't see your post when i posted.. tough to refresh continuously when you're at work... ;)

Here comes the ever popular, Comcast Devils fan's FAVORITE question.
Anyone know if the Saturday night game is going to be aired on the TV Guide Channel?
(I guess that officially means the season is about to begin)
Posted by: RickyM2 | September 30, 2009 at 03:13 PM
Leach should be annoyed with his agent.
By having to clear re-entry waivers - he probably plays for the minor league salary all year - Lets says $125 for an example.
But if he was able to recalled cause he was making $100k/$500k, he would only need to be up about 1/7 of the seasons (making his NHL salary) to break even. More time in the NHL - due to injuries, ineffective play, etc, means he makes out.
I guess it is a gamble that they lost - figuring that the Devils would not want to submit him re-entry waivers would keep him on the roster.
Other question is - would anybody claim him?
