The Devils placed left wing Brendan Shanahan on waivers today, general manager Lou Lamoriello confirmed.
If Shanahan is not claimed by another team before noon on Wednesday, the Devils would be free to assign him to their AHL affiliate in Lowell. That would clear his $1 million salary from their salary cap.
Lamoriello would not say whether Shanahan would be assigned to Lowell or what the next step would be if the 40-year-old future Hall of Famer is not claimed by another team. He also would not answer when asked if he had discussed this plan with Shanahan before placing him on waivers.
Shanahan's agent, Rick Curran, has not returned telephone messages.
The Devils moved Shanahan Monday to the "non-roster list", so they could activate right wing Ilkka Pikkarainen off injured reserve.

Yep, ALL THE BEST SHANNY !

I love that Lou just can't confirm this. I can't take this guy and his "double secret probation" BS anymore!
Thanks to him the team is a PR nightmare!

most people aren't obsessed like us, and don't need updates the instant it happens, warren.

There are people not obsessed with hockey, poor bastards.
Posted by: devilstown | October 06, 2009 at 03:31 PM
@rob: Very true.
TG: Has anyone said anything about trying to trade Shanny? They took him off the roster a week ago and just now they are putting him on waivers?
Posted by: Chad | October 06, 2009 at 03:31 PM
TG call shanny and get his side. I would hate for this to be a guy who wants to play but is forced out of the league this way. Too classy for this. If they are willing to pay him $1 mill for nothing, then trade him for anything even if you take back an Ahl guy who is junk. My bet is they send him down, he won't report, suspended without pay for season. Shanny retires and wants nothing to do with NJ again. I hate pikkaurnose for showing up to camp.
Well tampa has inproved a great deal, not getting the results yet, but don't sleep on them. Mike smith is an athletic goalie who can stand on his head at times. Atlanta has improved as well, and florida is no longer a push over. We all know how we have fits with the islanders, point is we gotta get our act together, parity is here.

nnjrules, I hope your "bet" about Shanny is wrong :-( but you are probably heading in the right direction with the results..

What the hell has happened to this franchise??? They treated to Mogilny and Shanny like dogs, they made horrible signings and had bad drafts, they lose so many players to free agency and never replace them. By "they" I mean Lou. FIRE LOU ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
At least I knew when to jump ship you guys should follow.
Posted by: A Local Fan | October 06, 2009 at 03:42 PM
How can we trade Shanny? He only wants to play in this area? Who would take him? Not the Rangers. Not the Flyers. The Islanders? I'm not sure if Shanny wants to play for them or not at this stage of his career.
Posted by: Puckster | October 06, 2009 at 03:43 PM
ALF, The Rangers treated Shanny like garbage two years ago, so you jumped onto the wrong ship.
Posted by: Puckster | October 06, 2009 at 03:44 PM
@Rob
I think the issue a lot of people have is Lou's secrecy for small items. I mean cmon, he couldn't tell the press (when asked) that he planned on waiving Shanny? What was the harm? It's laughable how paranoid he is. Imagine his poor wife:
Wife: "Honey where are the car keys?"
Lou: "Sorry, I can't comment on that right now"

Instead of worrying about getting acts (and people) into the Pru Center, Jeff VDB should be worrying about the big act that actually uses the building for 81 nights a year.
TG...do you have any idea how much more profitable the building would have been if the Devs had made deep runs the last two seasons? Just wondering...

ALF...always good for a laugh. Jumping ship is not what a true fan does. Get a clue!!
Posted by: V | October 06, 2009 at 03:50 PM
wow good thing assisted suicide isnt legal in this country or this blog would be pretty empty.... lets all put down our noose's and just relax for a minute and realize that the season is only 2 games in, and that there is still 7 months of season left. On days like today i think i(and a few other loyal posters and readers here) need to just stick to TG's posts. people that already have a negative mindset about the season are NOT going to change no matter how much you argue with them, so why argue with them. As for the rangers fans that post here, don't respond, if you don't respond they won't come back.

The most laughable bit of paranoia--to my mind--is the fact that the asst. coaches are prohibited form speaking to the media.
In the meantime...other team's asst.'s are able to give immediate between period interviews with the TV crew.
For Lord's sakes...what is he afraid of? What deep dark, top secrets could the asst. coaches POSSIBLY give away???

Great comment PJ, Michael Westen would be proud.
Posted by: Tom | October 06, 2009 at 03:53 PM
Okay...okay before I hear it. I caught the mistake. They use the building for 41 nights (not counting pre-season).

Thanks Tom.... I actually watched my Burn Notice DVD's last night after the game with a glass of chocolate milk to feel better... and yeah i am 30 and drink chocolate milk WHAT ABOUT IT!

@Pearl Jammed
I couldn't have said it better myself. We need to just calm down and realize that while no the team did not win last night, they looked much better than Saturday. For the first few weeks the team will still be getting used to this new system Lemaire has them running. Shanahan clearly did not fit into this system so he is moving on, if he was not okay with the move he would have said so. Lou has won 3 Stanley Cups as a GM which is 3 more than all of us here posting combined, therefore I trust his judgment on this move.

Nestle Chocolate Milk Rocks. Although Farmland (only in bottles) is a close second.
I drowned my sorrows on Saturday night at Hells Kitchen in Newark. Nice to see a bar full of Devils fans after a tough loss. Felt almost like a wake!

PJ.. I didnt know Assisted Suicide was illegal. Are you sure? Cause last time I checked the Mets are still gunna be allowed to play again next year. You can see the suicide attempts each year the Yankees win. If you look at the parade you will notice all the yankee fans on B'way in the streets, and look up and the people hanging out the windows are the Mets fans

Technically a drink...but Yoo Hoo beats them all!
Posted by: Warren | October 06, 2009 at 04:08 PM
Pearljammed, like most things you write you are wrong. I don't care who responds to me because I will never leave. It's nice to have a Rangers fan point of view.
I think the Devils have a good shot at the playoffs and I don't hate the Devils. I just think Lou is out of touch with today's NHL. He is the reason I had to become a Rangers fan and not root for the Devils anymore.

Our roster has too many AHL guys, not a strong lineup Jacques has to work with.
