Conservative Recasting of Christie Begins

Sen. Loretta Weinberg, the Teaneck Democrat, will attend at State House news conference today, declaring Chris Christie "too conservative" for NJ.

No summer-time lull for this campaign, not with Corzine's numbers in the tank and a rebate-less budget yet-to-be signed. The Democratic guns will be firing early this year.

Corzine Reaffirms Post Super Tuesday II-Support for Hillary

Governor Corzine has been under a kind of Super Delegate Flip Watch since Sen. Hillary Clinton's fortunes faded following an 11-state losing streak. Nonetheless, he had remained a Clinton stalwart , hitting the trail for her in four different primaries over the past few months. He reaffirmed his support following Tuesday night's victories in Ohio, Texas, and Rhode Island. Here is his statement, released through the Democratic State Committee this morning.

"I'm very excited about last night. Hillary Clinton won by hundreds of thousands of votes - a substantial victory - and she has the clear momentum. She's the most qualified candidate to be President of the United States in either party."

"Whether you are talking about national security or international relations, women's rights, health care or the economy, she is in a leadership position."

"The fact that the Democratic campaign continues is a good thing. A full vetting of the issues and a continuing dialog builds enthusiasm,  builds excitement and builds turnout. We saw it in New Jersey and we're seeing it across America."

"Hillary rocks - and she's going to roll in Pennsylvania"

Menendez to Texas

Sen. Bob Menendez will be in Texas tomorrow through Sunday to campaign for Sen. Hillary Clinton.

Menendez, D-N.J. will be leading a group of Latino officials in trying to rally the sizable Texas Latino community behind Clinton. Primaries in Texas and Ohio on Tuesday are pivotal to whether Clinton, D-N.Y., remains in the campaign against Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.

Clinton picked up the support today of a Texas superdelegate, El Paso County Commissioner Veronica Escobar, who had previously been supporting Obama. Clinton's campaign also touted a Latino Decisions Texas poll that showed her with a 62 percent to 21 percent lead among Latino voters.

"Senator Clinton has a tremendous opportunity to score some big victories on Tuesday that would put her on track to the nomination, and I am excited to help amplify her message in Texas -- perhaps the most crucial March 4 state," said Menendez.

Poll: Either Democrat ahead

Both Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama beat Sen. John McCain in New Jersey, a Quinnipiac University poll released this week shows.

The poll found Clinton beats McCain 47-41, while Obama wins 46-39. Clinton does better than Obama with women, while Obama does better with independents.

NJ's Smith vouches for McCain on abortion

Rep. Chris Smith, R-Robbinsville, defends Republican presidential frontrunner John McCain's pro-life credentials in a story in the Washington Times.

Smith is a longtime leader of the effort to ban abortion in Congress, and defended McCain from those who questioned his committment.

"He is pro-life in his heart of hearts, in my opinion," Smith said of McCain.

The web site Life News carried a story about the Times story that also included this quote from Smith:

"The extreme positions taken by Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have been almost completely obscured, as it often is, by the focus on the Republican candidate. Some people like to be known as the education president. They will be known as the abortion president."

Meet Ron Paul, Current Congressman

An earlier post incorrectly identified Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul as a former Texas Congressman. He represents the 14th Congressional District in Texas, a slice of the Gulf Coast that includes Galveston. I've included links to his campaign congressional website and his presidential campaign.

Republican straw Poll lineup changes

There won’t be a “Clash of the Keans” at the Bergen County Republican Organization headquarters on Saturday as party officials originally hoped.

Robert Ortiz, the BCRO chairman, had sought to recruit former Gov. Thomas H. Kean as speaker surrogate for Arizona Sen. John McCain for Saturday’s candidate forum and straw poll. Assemblyman David Russo of

Ridgewood

will do it instead. And Ortiz also sought Thomas H. Kean Jr., to serve as former New York Mayor Rudolph Guiliani, but that became a moot issue when Guiliani dropped out on Wednesday.

Monmouth

County

state Sen. Joseph Kyrillos will serve as former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney stand-in, and Ramapo professor Murray Sabrin, a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate this year, will represent former Texas Congressman Ron Paul. Officials are still searching for someone to represent Mike Huckabee, the former

Arkansas

governor.

   Here is the schedule:

TIMES

     8:00 a.m. Doors open/registration begins

     10:00 a.m. Speaker presentations begin

     11:00 a.m. Voting begins

WHERE: BCRO Headquarters

339 Main Street

,

Bergen Grassroots back "second choice" Obama

Bergen Grassroots, a liberal reform group, endorsed its “second choice” today, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama. The group originally endorsed former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, who withdrew from the race on Wednesday.

Here is their statement.

“If you read the results of our DemoChoice presidential nomination poll that ended on the final day of 2007, you know Barack  Obama finished second to John Edwards in the final round. The result demonstrated Obama was the first or second choice of a heavy majority of our members.

Our first choice, John Edwards is no longer seeking the party's nomination. We can only hope his outstanding programs and clear approach to the nation's problems remain in the public eye as we proceed to elect a president.

It is time to throw our support behind our second choice. The Bergen Grassroots Steering Committee and leadership group, with a near-unanimous vote, has endorsed Senator Obama. We will provide leadership to our group's Obama supporters to help him secure the party's nomination.

Returning to our DemoChoice poll results, Hillary Clinton got 9% of the vote in the first round. When the votes were distributed as lower-ranking candidates were removed, her total never rose above 10%. We encourage our Hillary supporters to do their best for their candidate because every one of us should work as hard as we can for the candidate of our choice. We know that come the Fall, we'll all be working for the Democratic candidate for President. And we're confident pro-Hillary members will want to continue with Bergen Grassroots because we share so many other goals and aspirations.”

Obama's Bergen Team leads rally tonight

The Bergen County Obama endorsement press conference was so thinly attended last September that the traffic circling near the Bergen County courthouse almost drowned out state Sen. Loretta Weinberg and U.S. Rep. Steve Rothman. But tonight, Obama's Bergen lieutenants are returning to Hackensack for a "Stand Up and Be Counted" rally at the Hackensack Civic Center  at 7:30 p.m. tonight (Jan. 30).

Rothman, Weinberg and Assemblyman Gordon Johnson will be leading the rally. The event comes one week after U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton swept through Hackensack for a fundraiser at the Stony Hill Inn and a rally at the Bergen Academy gym. Clinton has been endorsed by the Bergen County Chairman Joe Ferriero.
