Gauging voter turnout

Zaida Polanco, a volunteer field director for Sen. Hillary Clinton drove to eight Passaic polling places Tuesday morning that the campaign considers important.

Img_0013_2 "What we do is we concentrate on specific districts," the 30-year-old Passaic resident said. "If the numbers are low, we'll have people do phone banks later."

Polanco said the timing of the election concerned campaign officials who worried that the earlier primary date could make voter turnout lower.
"People are not used to voting in February, so we have to do constant phone banking," she said.
Poll workers at three Passaic sites reported a slow turnout before noon Tuesday, but said that that wasn't unusual.
