Spotted Rooster opens
The Spotted Rooster, a small cafe serving breakfast, sandwiches and homemade pastries, has opened in Mahwah. Its the third name for that space since spring. Cafe Mateo closed in April. Mahwah Cafe opened in May and closed in September.
The Spotted Rooster is at 164 Franklin Turnpike, Mahwah; 201-529-4200.
i tried the spotted rooster on my lunch break after hearing some good reviews, and was very pleasantly surprised. The owner is actually a well seasoned NYC elite chef, everything was made from scratch including soups and amazing popovers. So far i have tried a 7 hour braised lamb panini that was full of flavor(and didnt feel heavy), and a bacon egg and cheese stuffed popover. The portions are right, the flavor is by far the best in the area, and the fresh ground itallion coffee actually tastes like coffee. I look forward to more soups and specials to try on my breaks.

I second the previous reviewer's comments. The Spotted Rooster was a very pleasant surprise, indeed. I recently had one of their popovers stuffed with an absolutely delicious chicken salad -- one of the best lunches I have had in this area in quite some time. I can't wait to try some of their other dishes.

The popovers are amazing, plain or stuffed. I've had them with the chicken salad and also with egg whites and spinach. The soups are great and there are these wonderful roasted red peppers stuffed with tuna fish that are to die for! The place has a nice vibe. It feels like a bistro has arrived in Mahwah. I can hardly wait for the dinner hours to start.
