Joel's Malibu Kitchen, the funky, quirky California-style restaurant that has been a breath of fresh air on Oak Street in Ridgewood since the mid-1990s has closed.
It's the second Ridgewood closing in the last week. Silver Oak American Bistro had its last dinner service last night. It expects to reopen after renovations this winter.
I've never been there but I remember the RECORD did a nice piece a while ago about the place.

This was not unexpected, but a little sooner then I thought.
Joel has really been burnt out from working so hard (and as we learned in the Record article last year, not making any money doing it).
He said he'd probably head back to Malibu, the land of sun, money, and drunken actors. Wish I was going too!
Good luck Joel and Thanks for all the great meals!

Yes, we tried to go to Joel's for dinner on Sunday night and it had vanished in a flash.
No sign or anything was left inside but the booths.
Its a shame as the food was very real.
Good luck Joel!

I called to make a reservation for New Years Eve tonight and was shocked to find out that my favorite restaurant in the world closed. I cannot even attempt to describe how upset I am. I always loved Joel, his restaurant and his wonderful cuisine. What an incredible shame :(

Very sad to hear the place has closed...Joels was by far the BEST place in town. Joel has a gift like no other! Every dish was a masterpiece. My wife and I are shocked and upset. I wish I had purchased the cook book sooner....BEST of luck Joel.

I was devastated when I walked past Joel's and saw the FOR RENT sign. There will be no more lava lamps, no more of Chef Joel stopping at my table to see if I enjoyed my Godzilla Stir-Fry. My all-time favorite restaurant is now a memory. I hope that Joel finds success, maybe back in Malibu. He's a great guy and a superb chef.

It was like getting struck by lightening! There I was, getting all ready for a nice meal at my favorite Ridgewood Digs, and I was saddened and SHOCKED by the view of the dimly lit, barren, ONCE FABULOUS restaraunt-- Joel's Mailbu Kitchen. Why did you leave us Joel! You gave Ridgewood Flair! Style! and a little Pizazz! We will miss you-- I will miss you! Bring yourself and your fabulous food back!

Joel - call David Remembers the good times in Malibu at the Riding Club. Malibu can use a guy like you once again!

Does anyone know where to find Joel or a copy of
Joel's Health Conscious Rock 'n' Roll Cookbook?
I miss this place.

Last I heard, Joel was pulling a shift or three at Harold's on Oradell/Ridgewood Ave in Paramus.
