A few weeks ago, our humor columnist, Bill Ervolino, wrote a series of articles about finding a second career, as so many have had to do in this difficult economy.
What else could he do, he asked a career counselor? Readers soon read about his attempts at teaching, selling real estate and -- at the suggestion of Elisa and me -- managing a restaurant dining room.
Bill spent the night as the host at the Village Grille in Waldwick (we first suggested Andiamo in Haworth, whose comedy-club angle seems custom-made for Bill, but he had trouble reaching someone right away), and turned in a fun dispatch on his experience.
I spend my weekends across the street from what used to be snackshop, which was my second employer (my first was my high school, where I washed dishes during lunch), which got me thinking about just how many cool jobs are out there in the realm of food. Jobs that would be, shall we say, Ervolino-worthy.
:: Supermarket cart wrangler. Harder than it looks.
:: Barbecue pitmaster. Some of the most eclectic people I know spend their day in a hickory-smoked haze.
:: Sonic carhop. I actually think Bill would be lousy at this, but it would be fun to see him on rollerskates.
:: Fish monger. Have you ever met one who doesn't have a wacky personality?
:: Prep cook. Especially in a place like Nisi or Portobello, where huge prep kitchens and their staffs are separate from the line. Bill would bring some fun to monotony of shaping crab cakes or cleaning mushrooms.
:: Ice delivery man. Maybe the best job to have during record-breaking heat.
Any other ideas?
And now we're going to see how long it takes for Bill to find this and start commenting.
Took me almost three months. Sorry. How did I miss it?
