Know your fishmonger

Here's another reason to build a relationship with your local fishmarket and seafood restaurant. Guys like them will be less likely to cheat you, unlike guys like this.

It's a New York Times report that says a  pair of teen-agers used DNA bar coding to prove that 15 of 60 samples of fish they'd purchased in stores and restaurants weren't the right fish. Tilapia instead of white tuna, for instance.

Tasting benefit in September

Sara_moulton_foodnetworkSeveral local restaurants will participate in a Sept. 22 tasting benefit for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, including Mantra in Paramus, Blue Moon in Englewood, Madeleine's Petit Paris in Northvale and Campania in Fair Lawn. Sara Moulton, the executive chef of Gourmet Magazine, will be the celebrity guest.

Red Mango in Pal Park soon

Redmango_2Because Palisades Park doesn't have enough frozen yogurt already...a Red Mango is coming to 262 Broad Ave., according to the corporate web site and a sign on the space.

For the uninitiated, Red Mango is a tart frozen yogurt that is creamier and more ice cream-like than Pinkberry, which has no New Jersey locations.

Fire kills Fort Lee bakery owner

Hirokazu Sano, who owned Parisienne Bakery on Main Street in Fort Lee, was killed in a fire at his Leonia home overnight. He was 48 years old and had owned the bakery for 20 years.

The Starbucks stops here

StarbuckslogoI was in upstate New York over the weekend, where the local newscasts were lamenting the loss of two Albany-area Starbucks stores. When I got back to New Jersey on Monday, I saw the same kind of breathless media attention: "Which Starbucks are going to close? Find out next." The newspaper are just as guilty.

Geez, people, it's just Starbucks. If some Dunkin Donuts stores was going to close, would everyone in the media care?

Benihana founder dies

Record_file_photo_aokiRocky Aoki, who founded the Benihana chain of restaurants and spent years in Bergen County, died today. He had been suffering from cancer. He was 69.

I want ice cream!!!

Joe Spiekermann, owner of  Mazur's Bakery in Lyndhurst, has thrown his toque into the frozen treat ring, According to his daughter Donna Spiekermann.

The popular bakery known for its black-and-white cookies and Swiss peasant bread now serves an array of cool treats from its newly installed ice cream window.
