State Tournaments, Seatbelts and a So Long

Well, here at IHA, State Tournament time is coming to a close!  Swimming has already won, beating Holy Spirit last Sunday in the State Finals. Bowling came in 5th Place in the State Tournament.  Winter Track dominated the State Tournament winning with 65 and 1/2 points.  I think I have all the sports there, oh wait, how could I forget IHA's crowning jewel, basketball!

That's right, ladies and gents, The State Tournament for basketball is just getting started.  IHA was seeded 1st and received a buy into the second round (Mt. St. Dominic, Morris Catholic, Roselle Catholic also received buys).  They will play the winner of Mt. St. Mary's of Watchung/Kent Place.  Those two face off tonight in the first round and the winner will play the Blue Eagles.

The Blue Eagles finished off their regular season with a heartbreaking loss to a tough Teaneck team, 48-45. The IHA team played their hearts out and gave the seniors, in their last guaranteed home game, something to be proud of.  Coach Silver told the team after the game, "That was as exciting a game you will find in Bergen County." In addition, I was fortunate enough to meet a member of the Bergen Record Sports Team, Mark Czerwinski, at the game, which was extremely exciting.  Coach Silver also told his team, "That is the way it is going to be in the State Tournament."  We'll see tomorrow night.

(I Owe Peter King Credit Here)  These are my 7 Non- Basketball thoughts of the day:

1) Congratulations to Danielle Romain, the sophomore shark, who won The Bergen Record's Athlete of the Week

2) Yes, the Penguins are surviving without Sydney Crosby.  They've won 4 straight.

3) Mel Gonzales, the Director of Trauma Prevention at Hackensack University Medical Center, is brilliant and gets through to kids in ways I have never seen.  She speaks about car accidents and drunk driving, among other things.  If you do not have her speak at your school already, CALL HER.  It will be one of the best decisions you have ever made.

4) The Broncos need Jay Cutler. Period.

5) Derek Jeter made the right call in playing for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic.  Is there any bigger honor than representing your country?

6) Peter King will be missed dearly by the town of Montclair and the entire Montclair softball program.  As one of his proteges, I can tell you that I have never had a finer coach.

And finally,

7) Had an opportunity to go see #1 Pit take on Seton Hall last Saturday, but could not go due to a previous commitment to go into New York.  My mother, not a big basketball fan, did not want to go alone and decided she would rather stay home.  My 91 year old grandmother, who played old-school, women's rules with 3 sections basketball until she was 30, and the biggest basketball fan I have ever met, decided she wanted to go.  Needless to say, My mother was in attendance on Saturday night.////

Forget the Golden Statue, here are the winners of the first annual Solid Sush Awards

Two nights ago I watched the Academy Awards and was enthralled by the dazzling performance by all the stars. Since the winter track season ended tonight with the conclusion of Eastern State Championships I might as well create my own set of awards in honor of the great (and some not-so-great) performances in Demarest track this year.
