Season Five
By BILL ERVOLINO
As is being reported elsewhere, "Lost" will resume on January 21, 2009 with a few new characters and some old ones we haven't seen in a while, including Ana Lucia (Michelle Rodriguez) and, in what promises to be a major revelation, the shopkeeper played by Fionulla Flanagan in "Flashes Before Your Eyes."
A REMINDER: This site doesn't run spoilers, except for cast info and the sort of vague items of interest that the creators, writers and cast members give out in interviews.
As the show revs up for its fifth season, more and more leaks are making their way onto the Internet, but some of us really don't want to know about every upcoming twist and turn.
What we do want to know is: What becomes of the Oceanic Six? What became of the island -- which seemingly disappeared? And what is the latest status of the ongoing tug of war between Ben and Charles Widmore?
There's also the question of Jin -- is he dead or isn't he? And for that matter, what happened to John Locke aka Jeremy Bentham?
It seems the show will be returning to its Wednesday 9 p.m. time slot, which will put it once again in the "American Idol" line of fire. Does it matter? Probably not, although it is frustrating when (too many) media types tell us how the ratings are dipping.
As we understand it, the fifth season will begin with a "three-hour event" that will include the annual recap ep and a two-hour season premiere.
I know it's going to take a while for many of this site's regular contributors to find their way here, again, but for those who do, it's never too early to start speculating, is it?

Less than 2 months to go and I can't wait. As far as speculation, mine is that the island represents a lost civilization from long ago (remember the 4-toed statue remnant?), whose members had advanced technology. Of course that technology came from ancient astronauts, i.e., visitors from another world. I mean, "moving" the island certainly requires some kind of advanced technology, and the mechanism to do that, as we saw last season, looks pretty ancient.
I heard from a friend that Lost will be the lead-in for "Life on Mars" once the season gets underway. That seems like a good pairing, since "Mars" also has some underlying weirdness.
And, speaking of other shows, how about Fringe, also produced by JJ Abrams? It's something to watch until Lost returns, and beyond. I'm hooked on it.
