Behind Closed Doors
As I type, Omar Minaya and his staff are meeting with representatives of the Orioles according to one person in the know. Don't expect them to come out of the meeting with any deal done, but the Mets are at least trying to push for Erik Bedard while the entire league seems to be lining up at the O's door to try to make a deal.
While the Mets have been rebuffed once with a package of Carlos Gomez, Phil Humber and Aaron Heilman, one baseball official wondered if the team would throw in a major league starter -- John Maine or Oliver Perez -- to sweeten a deal?
And no, the reports in the gossip sections of the New York tabloids today, that Maine was offering money up to women to try on their dress for a photo, was, according to the Mets, not true. Maine is still in Virginia and was hunting. Not for dresses.
Minaya has been invisible today and according to another official is expected to meet with the agent for Octavio Dotel and Shawn Chacon tonight.
Omar hasn't made a bold move in nearly 3 years. It's time to pull the trigger on a deal and stop going for mid-level starters with the hope that Rick Peterson can fix their problems in "10 minutes."
