The Mets placed Steven Register on waivers today - a move first reported on the NY Daily News blog and confirmed by a baseball official. He has 48 hours to clear waivers and can not be called back if a team selects him.
Register, who came to the Mets as a Rule 5 Draft pick from the Colorado Rockies, was put on waivers so that the team could possibly place him in the minor leagues. But if he is not selected by another team, the Mets would still have to offer him back to the Rockies.
The move could open a bullpen spot. If Duaner Sanchez is not ready to join the club from the start of the season, and it appears he may not be, the frontrunners to grab that final spot now would be either Nelson Figueroa in a long relief role, Brian Stokes (who is out of options) or Joe Smith. Smith is the only one that has options and can be sent to the minors without risk of losing him.
May he clear waivers and return to the Rockies, ringing up $25,000.00 on the Mets' register and closing the drawer on these awful puns. Cha-ching!
