Now that Jeff Wilpon and Omar Minaya have come out and said that the Mets will be players for the best and brightest on the market this year, here is the Christmas list.
Here is a projection of the Type A Free Agents, thanks to MLBTradeRumors.com, which thanks blogger Eddie Bajek. They did the math that I couldn't figure out - usually left to the Elias Sports Bureau. Anyway, they did the work and put it together - it's not official, but it's a pretty good list.
I've gotten the feeling all year that the Mets will be seeking a handful of second-tier players rather than securing the big-money pieces. But Wilpon put himself on the record - and on the ledge - with his proclamations in recent letters to season-ticket holders and then from the podium at Citi Field Monday.
No one would argue that the likes of Jason Bay or Matt Holliday, John Lackey or (via trade) Roy Halliday would be perfect fits. I just get the vibe from the Mets that the more likely scenario will be depth being added.
i hope so. the mets have enough stars. it's time to bring in a full support staff. i want this spring training to have the no position battles and fewest roster battles in years.

I like John Lackey the best of that bunch. Even though he'll be 31 next year, his innings pitched have been under 200 the last couple of years and his ERA has been under 4.00 for five straight years - no easy task in the A.L.
It would be great to steal Gonzalez from the Braves and help the 'pen, but I'm not sure he's worth Type A compensation.

If the Mets add Matt Holliday they will have a Top 5 offense in the NL.
Reyes
Castillo
Wright
Holliday
Beltran
Francouer
Murphy
Thole/Santos
I wouldn't touch John Lackey. Missed April in both this year and last. We dont need any more injuries!

Excellent read, I just passed this onto a colleague who was doing a little research on that. And he actually bought me lunch because I found it for him smile So let me rephrase that.
