BREAKING NEWS:Horseshoe crab reprieve

On Monday, the New Jersey Marine Fisheries Council voted not to extend the moratorium on harvesting horseshoe crabs in this state -- jeopardizing the survival of a migratory shorebird called the red knot.

I just heard that Governor Corzine has agreed to protect the horseshoe crabs, and that the state Legislature will consider legislation to give the ban more teeth.

This could be great news for the endangered red knot. Awaiting more information.

It is true that the red knot needs the horseshoe crab but we need the horseshoe crab for our survival as well, Not enough stress told on the wonderful lysate that is extracted from the horseshoe crab and may one day be needed by the fishermen themselves. If that was told to the fishermen they may realize the terrible harm they are causing to themselves, not to mention they have survived all these million of years and we humans may be the cause of their extinction!

Unfortunately, I fear the fishermen will not be swayed by logic or research. They outnumbered the naturalists on the voting board and won out when two community board positions went unfilled. I feel that the research and experimentation being done to find a good substitute for horseshoe crab bait that is used by the fishermen when they stock up on eel and conche is where the answer lies. Our efforts to help the fishermen in this way would be an answer for horseshoe crab AND red knot protectors. A several year extention of the moretorium might net us a long term solution.
