Gholston to Jets
Matt Ryan and Darren McFadden already were off the board, so there wasn't much intrigue when the sixth pick came up. The choice seemed obvious: Ohio State DE-LB Vernon Gholston or Troy CB Leodis McKelvin. The Jets went with Gholston, obviously believing in the Giants' blueprint for beating New England in the Super Bowl. That is, you can't have too many pass rushers.
Gholston had 14 sacks in 2007, and gives the Jets an edge rusher who can beat people one-on-one. He had seven of those sacks in two games, four against Wisconsin and three against Michigan. But therein lies one of the biggest knocks against him--that he takes plays and/or games off. I would look at it, however, as a positive that he had two of his biggest games against the Buckeyes' toughest opponents.
I like the pick. I don't have a problem with it, although they still need a corner.
Gholston leaped up the charts after a tremendous performance at the Combine in February, and the Jets obviously believe he will be a perfect outside rusher in their 3-4 system.
"I'm always happy with sacks in bunches if that’s the way they're going to come," coach Eric Mangini said with a smile, but he added, "There were a lot of games where he may not have had a sack but he affected the quarterback quite a bit.
"He's a conscientious hard-working, really young guy that I think is going to continue to mature," Mangini added.
