Back to work; camp breaks Wednesday

Busy day at camp today as the Jets returned to practice. It was a rather long workout by Eric Mangini's 2008 standards, two hours and 13 minutes, which was the second-longest practice of training camp this summer.

Brett Favre had mixed results, especially in the two-minute drill, where an underthrown pass for Brad Smith resulted in an INT by CB Darrelle Revis. But a penalty nullified the pick and Favre, who completed three throws to Chansi Stuckey on the 'drive,' eventually guided the offense to a 54-yard FG by Mike Nugent, who later missed a 53-yarder after Kellen Clemens did the two-minute offense.

Nugent, btw, took full responsibility for his 23-yard miss against Washington Saturday night, chastising himself for not 'focusing' better. He also said that his foot got too much of the left side of the ball on his 43-yard miss earlier in the game, which he pushed wide right.

Rookie CB Dwight Lowery worked with the first-team part of the time in practice, and it seems he is climbing up the depth charts. Prediction: don't be surprised if he's starting at RCB opposite Revis by mid-season.

WR Laveranues Coles [leg] and DE Shaun Ellis [hand] both returned to practice, although Coles appeared very limited. That's one reason why Stuckey caught so many passes from Favre in the hurry-up, because LC wasn't in there at the time. Another reason is that Stuckey is pretty good. He figures to have a significant role this season, especially now that WR David Clowney [shoulder/clavicle], who appeared a lock to make the squad and provide a speed threat, is out for awhile. WR Marcus Henry got more balls thrown to him in Clowney's absence, and looked sharp.

BTW, the Jets signed WR Larry Brackins, a former Arena Leaguer, to take the roster spot vacated when they cut S Nate Lyles Monday.

As for Wednesday, although the Jets haven't announced anything officially, I learned from a Hofstra source [remember, I'm an alum of the school, although that affiliation won't matter all that much in less than two weeks when the Jets move] that Wednesday will be the last training camp practice for the Jets, meaning it's the last chance for fans to watch them work out before they move their practices to the back of the facility in private. [And before they leave Long Island altogether on Sept. 2 to go to Florham Park.]

UPDATE: The Jets just announced that it will, indeed, be the last open practice at Hofstra, and that the players will be signing autographs afterward.
