Quite simple, really.
You point out that Dany Heatley wants out of Ottawa. Then you note that his $7.5 million annual salary approximates Scott Gomez's cap hit to the Rangers, plus the fact that both have limited movement clauses in their contract. Then you wisely suggest that Heatley's offensive prowess might be a good fit for a team that struggles to score like the Rangers.
Seriously, if you're GM Glen Sather, you have to at least pick up the phone and see if there are any parameters to make a deal. No way the Senators do Heatley for Gomez straight up (at least I wouldn't if I were the Senators) but would Gomez and a first-round pick do the trick, or maybe Gomez and one of the Rangers D-man prospects and/or a first-round pick. I'm not sure and perhaps the price goes too high. But, if you're Glen Sather, you have to pick up the phone.
How about you guys, does Heatley interest you at all? I will say this, this is the second stop where Heatley has asked out. We all know what happened in Atlanta and the Thrashers bent over backwards to accommodate Heatley because he didn't feel comfortable playing in that city any more. Now Ottawa? Because Heatley doesn't like the coach/system? It's the type of stuff that gives a guy a reputation.
id give Sathers left nut to have a perennial 40-50 goal scorer on this team.
My offer would be Gomez Sanguinetti and our first...see if that gets it done.

I say no. I know that I have said all year that Gomez made a lot of mistakes and he is not playing up to his contract but I am not a big fan of Heatley. It always seems like every place he goes he is whining about something. As far as a player-well I think there are better options out there-seriously. And I will say again that I understand if opportunities present themselves you have to consider them I still say PRIORITY NUMBER 1 is to get rid of Redden-period. He's making so much money and he was a number 5 or 6 Dman-it's unacceptable.

no if it means trading 1st rd pick or top end prospects. we have to learn to grow our own and not rely on mercenaries from other organizations especially a guy who has now asked out of 2 situations.
i didn't even like giving up the 2nd rd pick in antropov - would rather have had 2 2nd rd picks than 1 - withthe one we still have being the cherry compensation pick.
meanwhile lets go wings tonight

"My offer would be Gomez Sanguinetti and our first...see if that gets it done."
Inferno.... What?
Yeah, let's just give up more youth. :P
I get the fact that Heatley is good, and I get the fact that he's 28, and having him on for 5 years would be nice, but as others point out, Redden should be our #1 priority to out, followed by Roszi. If we get a realistic offer for Gomez, then so be it, but odds are we wont. Gomez for Heatley would be a God Send at this point. This is all, however, set in the realm of fantasy.
The reality of the situation is, anything could happen. Sather seems determined to grind this team into the dirt, and I'll still say that giving up both Prucha *and* Dawes was a terrible mistake. Internal growth is where it's at, internal growth is what is bringing teams to the dance, and we're just gonna be the fat kid sitting on the sidelines yet again.
Look to Hartford... 'Nuff Said.

Getting a guy like Heatley in here is exactly what this team needs. I doubt it can be done for pretty much any package we have, but it is nice to dream. There is nobody in the system with a skillset like Heatley's and you can't win a championship wihtout a guy of that caliber.
I would gladly give up Gomez, Sanguinetti and our first, but do not think that would be enough to get it done. Do you think there could be anything better for a young center's development (Dubinsky) than playing with a goal scorer of Heatley's stature? I don't think Dubi is a first line center in his prime, but he can hold his own there and proved it two years ago on Jagr's line. It is a solution to our problems.
Then trade Rozy for Iginla and we are good.

Full props to you Andrew for being the only writer to commment on this immediatley on their blog.
As for Heatly. You try and trade Gomez/Sanguinetti/1st round package any day of the week. It is a steep price but it would be a great fit for both teams.

WAY too high a price for an offense-only type who hasn't shown anything in the playoffs. Haven't we been down this road too often already? Blueshirts need some fresh thinking in the front office, folks.

again i would not be happy at all giving that package for heatley. willing to bet inside 2 yrs we'd be talking about how soon we can get rid of heatley. grass is always greener as they say.
howie - giving up prucha and dawes was no problem/ neither was part of our future. and prucha at about $ 1.6 mm was too high. dawes was sitting quite a few games as a healthy scratch in phoenix.

TR, not a great fit for both teams. Giving Gomez does not help the Sens, then they have multiple top six centers, but not enough scoring wingers, same problem as we have right now. We need to find a trading partner with the opposite problems that we have right now, a team with many top six wingers, but few, if any centers. The sad thing is until Renney went to Edmonton our frequent trading partner in the Northwest would look pretty nice. If we could pry Hemsky or O'Sullivan, in exchange for a top line center it might happen, but not with Renney working there now.
Also, you are drastically overrating our players or underrating a perrenial 50 goal scorer after one down season if you wouldn't do that deal right now IMO.

i think the only reason rangers would look at a guy like heatley is to get help for gomez. imagine gomez and heatley playing together= 50+ goals and 50+ assists. I say offer up heatley and the rights to comrie for drury, sanguinetti, first round pick, and rights to zherdev
i am a devils fan btw but gomez remains one of my favorite players
Posted by: markd | June 10, 2009 at 02:56 PM
markd -- drury has full no movement clause so he can't be traded unless he agrees

NO Heatly - Isn't he the one who's DWI incident killed one of his teammates? Let him stay in Canada.
