John Tortorella spoke with the media for nearly an hour this morning - 56 minutes - and he began with two announcements:
1. He, along with the rest of the MSG employees, attended media training this summer. One of the topics? "No cursing." Torts blew that one a few times in his first two sentences. Actually, Tortorella, who can be both combative and engaging, often at the same time, was the latter today. He'll never be a fan of the media but, like the players he often argues with, that doesn't mean he thinks we're all bad people.
2. He wanted to find a role for Jim Schoenfeld on his coaching staff despite preferring only two bench coaches and went to both Schoenfeld and GM Glen Sather after the season to guage their response. Schoenfeld will work with the penalty killers and the defensemen to a degree but won't be on the bench during games. During games, Tortorella will work with the forwards and Mike Sullivan will call out the defense pairings.
"I thought (Schoenfeld) did such a great job with individual teaching and relationships with the players," Tortorella said. "Jimmy will not be on the bench during games and that releases him to do his other duties (as Hartford GM and as Rangers assistant GM).
Unlike some past preseasons, Tortorella said he will run the bench for all seven games because he needs to get to know his players, both veteran and youngsters.
By the way, plenty of Tortorella stuff today so rather than do one long blog, I'm going to try to break it up into different subjects. So please check back often.
