Waterreus deal is legit
I didn't believe it at first but apparently the Red Bulls long-rumored deal with Dutch goalkeeper Ronald Waterreus is legitimate. Fans shouldn't worry though, the former Rangers goalkeeper won't be coming as a designated player. In fact, he might arrive simply as a discovery player, which would still allow the team to pay him a salary in the 100K to 125K range.
This move likely signals the permanent end of Tony Meola's career with the Red Bulls since I doubt the squad will be looking to bring Waterreus, Meola and Jon Conway to camp. Meola had been placed on waivers two months ago but there was still some belief that he would come to training camp with a chance to battle for the starting job. Now, that doesn't seem as likely.
The deal would leave the Red Bulls with two senior international slots, just enough for two designated players, so maybe a Waterreus signing wouldn't be so bad after all, assuming he can beat out Conway for the starting job.
Ives,
interesting. smart move not using a DP slot on him. any idea what Trecker's talking about? he seems to think he's sitting on a big story in the making but won't say what it is.

Yesterday, Frank Giase reported:
It was thought that Meola, who was waived Nov. 22, could return in a backup role, but Arena said that won't happen.
"Tony's not on the radar," he said. "We need to go in a different direction."
