Some more info on the Mathis trade

According to the Denver Post, Real Salt Lake is still paying the same amount of Clint Mathis' salary in 2007 that it paid in 2006, approximately $300,000. If Mathis is set to make the same amount in 2007 that he made last year, $410,000, that leaves just $110,000 to be paid. The story states that the Rapids will save "almost six figures in salary", which means the Rapids are paying a portion of the deal.

The Post story also has the trade being for a fourth-round pick as well as additional picks based on Mathis' performance, which the Post was told by Rapids coach Fernando Clavijo. I have the trade being for a partial allocation. Hopefully we find out which one it actually is, or if its both, on Friday.

One thing is clear. If the Red Bulls are only paying something like $80,000 for Mathis then you can certainly see why the club would take a chance on him.

Why does Clint's acquisition mean no more pursuit of Angel? I see no reason why this has any impact, unless all of a sudden Metro brass are satisfied with the number of forwards or they feel that Clint is just like having a DP at forward. I find both of those hard to believe...
