Reminds me of a Van Nistelrooy goal of a few years ago for Man U vs. Fulham.

Messi actually made a lot more defenders miss though, 3 of them with that nice little left-outstep flick.

Fantastic! Close to duplicating what Maradona did vs England in WC 86.
*jumps on soapbox*
folks - thats what the MLS needs. YOUNG superstars!!!
*falls off soapbox*

Oh my god. My jaw just fell into the basement.
Hm, bringing players like Messi to MLS would only cost $30-40 mil per year, let's do it.

Actually also reminds me of Cletus/Clint Mathis's goal vs Dallas back in 2000 too!

If I may be so sacrilegious... that's actually even BETTER than El Pibe's. I for one am sure I've never seen a better goal.

Joamiq - You are the MLS. you are paying 20-25 mill a year for a good set piece player (see Beckham) and his name...why not spend and go for the younger guns, Kaka's,Messi's, et al...???
that has been my arguement since the MLS inception in 96. open the bank for young superstars, or potential superstars.

That goal was crazy. If you go to youtube and get the spanish commentary the commentators are just going bonkers.

Russ - Because MLS is not paying Beckham $25 mil. AEG is paying him $5.1 mil and MLS is paying him $400k. You won't find anyone willing to pay someone like Messi the insane amount of money it would cost to convince him to play in MLS.

Cap Him

It reminded me of Maradona's goal.
They also showed Messi's goal on ESPN2 during the Crew-Revs game.

Russ - FYI, MLS only pays $400k a year for Beckham. The rest comes from the Galaxy's owners, shirt sales, and sponsorships.

I AM A PROUD ARGIE!!!!!!!!
AND FINALLY . . . after two decades of the predictions falling through for "THE NEXT MARADONA", I think we may have the real deal . . . and from BOCA no less!
Im telling ya, WC Champs, ARGENTINA or USA
Posted by: Uncle Dave | April 20, 2007 at 09:47 AM
If someone did that in the MLS people would just say that the MLS defenders suck

What a great goal!!

MLS is not at a point where young stars playing for big clubs in europe will choose to come here. They want to prove themselves at the biggest level, in front of the fans and cameras. The same way the best basketball players want to play in the best league the NBA.

emilio, totally nailed it...that point is far more important to the discussion, than the money.
even if MLS offered to make Messi the highest paid player in the world, he wouldn't come (unless of course, MLS was throwing that kinda money at EVERYONE, and it was trying to become one of the top 3 leagues in the world)
anyways, realistically speaking, that's not happening and young guys like Messi are going to continue to want to play in the top leagues, as they should.

agreed with J.
MLS needs to concentrate on
a - development of its youth
b - outreach to the stars past 28 yo age, letting them know early they will have an exciting home in MLS for their competitive fire to burn.
The middle section? Aint coming here. Young talent at their peak seek places to challenge them through their developmental systems, which are not all that grand in the states. Just the way it is. Let the sport grow, lets produce some proven all stars worldwide, and MAYBE we can land a Messi or a Tevez or Higuain or whatever.

Folks, the blog is experiencing technical difficulties, which is why there have been no posts today. Hopefully this can be resolved at some point tonight so I can post some of the stuff I had ready to go today. Sorry for the inconvenience.
