Juan Pablo Angel secures work visa

Colombian striker Juan Pablo Angel has received his work visa, clearing the way for him to play in the Red Bulls' next MLS match, on Sunday against Colorado at Giants Stadium. Angel still might play in the US Open Cup on Tuesday night against the LA Galaxy but that remains uncertain. What is certain is that he will be in uniform on Sunday.

Angel began training with the Red Bulls early last week. He looks as good as you would expect, deadly in the air, fast, a blistering finisher and very good with the ball at his feet. The team played full-sided today so it provided the first glimpse of a Red Bulls attack with Angel and I have to say that it was pretty impressive after watching him for two days.

So what will a lineup look like with Angel. Here's one possibility:

Kovalenko and Stammler can alternate in the central midfield slot alongside Reyna but no matter which plays you still have to be impressed with that front six. It looked pretty good in training and worked very well, with Dave Van Den Bergh firing down the left flank and Mathis floating around behind the fowards and on the right flank. Angel is adept at dropping back to receive balls and can handle the ball very well in traffic. Seeing him and Altidore working off each other was impressive.

If you're wondering about Angel's fitness, it is definitely not a concern. He was thorougly impressive in fitness drills and is in mid-season shape, which shouldn't be surprising since he was in the middle of the EPL season before he came over.

One of the most impressive displays of Wednesday's training was Angel during finishing drills. He strikes the ball hard and well and delivers the type of hard and accurate headers you just don't see that much of in MLS.

In short, the man is on another level. He should start from day one and has the talent to be a 15-20 goal scorer in MLS.

Nice to see we now have options in the attack - Richards, Schopp (when he gets over his hernia), Dema - can all provide some serious firepower and bite for a change of pace. And Woly at #4 isn't too bad either.

Is your lineup in the article part of the original idea Arena had for the team? Wynne moving up on the right flank, schopp moving in? Instead now we would have Freeman moving up the right flank giving Mathis the liberty to roam behind the F attackers?

I basically agree with Joey's formation, with a diamond with Clint at the top and Reyna at the bottom.

Alternatively, we might see the same formation as we saw last weekend - the 4-5-1 - with Angel as a sub, since it is his first appearance.

The line up, in effect, will be basically what Joey listed (minus Richards) because Mathis will be playing behind the two, Freeman will take that wing and trek it back on D the rest of the way.

Thank god for Freeman and Arena. They give us versatility.

I believe that he will Start Sunday. Hopefully he can provide 15 goals for the team this season. But I can deny I’m very happy for what I see on the field. Besides the 3 goals they score on us on Sunday, the defense is in pretty good shape, Midfield, best that we had in years, now forwards they will be pretty good with Angel. But what I hope best is for Angel to help Altidore mature, he is the Future, and we want him to become the best player out there.

I think you need either Stammler or Kovalenko in there as a second defensive mid or else Reyna won't be able to move up and start the action.

Sorry, but it is either Mathis or Richards, not both.

This is all assuming 4-4-2; 4-5-1 could change it quite a bit.
