Galaxy lands Carlos Pavon
The Los Angeles Galaxy's quest to land the signature of veteran Honduran forward Carlos Pavon has come to a successful end. According a source with knowledge of the situation, Pavon has completed a deal to join the Galaxy.
As first reported by the Washington Post, the Galaxy have been in hot pursuit of Pavon for a few weeks now and managed to secure his services just as he has starred for Honduras during the Gold Cup. There is no word on whether Alexi Lalas will go to the airport to pick up Pavon from Honduran national team duty.
So how exactly can the Galaxy fit Pavon, Beckham, Donovan and Abel Xavier under their salary cap? It's called not paying much to the rest of the people on the roster. Only Joe Cannon ($192K), makes more than $142K among the rest of the guys on the roster and Xavier is making a solid but not outrageous $156K. Also, we shouldn't assume Pavon is making big bucks either. It is doubtful that he had big contracts awaiting him elsewhere. There's a reason he found his way back to Honduras.
That said, adding Pavon and Edson Buddle should help a floundering offense (though I should state emphatically that I think Toronto FC made out in that trade). Now, if the team can trade Nate Jaqua for something useful they might get somewhere. Just as long as Pavon does better than the last Honduran star who tried to make Home Depot Center his place of employment.
What do you think of this deal? Do you like it or not? Share your thoughts below.

Erm and I here Figo might be coming to? How come Lalas couldn't do this in NY? Who was his big signing there? Daniel Garipe? Also, I agree hwo the heck is he paying these people?

Figo is staying with Inter, I read that this week. Congrats on Pavon.

I am a Galaxy fan, and the way I look at everything is that it can't get worse up front. I think Pavon is a good signing. Even the Buddle deal was worth a shot in my opinion though I seem to stand alone in this thought. Considering that Xavier can do more than Marshall, it is worth the risk for getting Buddle. The Galaxy need to win some games and score some goals to do so if they want a chance at making the playoffs when Beckham arrives. So any change at this point appears to be worth the risk. They can't get any worse up front.

Ives, this is John. No, I was neither Jack nor Frank or whatever his name was. What a great way to save face. I and anyone else have the right to criticize you anytime we do not agree with you. This does not mean we dislike you. But you and your little group of groupies really do take criticism personally. Yes, you have a real group of winners on your side. I laughed so hard when I read their ridiculous comments. It amazes me that they are adults- pathetic. Your same little group will probably bash me after this but I will not even lower myself to their level. I am sure they will write nonsense once again showing their level of intelligence. This is the last time I enter into your blogs anyway. It is just too simple for me. Go ahead groupies, get bent because I said ‘simple.' Your groupies can write away and the intelligent ones will just ignore me and not make any comments and write about the matter at hand. You have a small group of insolent low lives who attack people when they do not agree with something. I guess they are just too stupid to express themselves in an educated manner. I never said you were a bad writer but you will never compare to someone like Carlisle or Dyer; they are pure class. Your writing would be that of Isabel Allende and theirs would be like Borges. I want to apologize for those who do not have an idea of what I am talking about. Please, just override what I have written. And for those groupies who think Ives is God, maybe you should by an Ives blow up doll.

Figo is too old, man. He has some skills, though.

Pavon is over rated. The only reason why he netted four goals is becuase he played against a Cuba that went to sleep. They just did come to play. By the way, why talk about the Galaxy? They stink. Red Bulls all the way this year.

Pavon did a good job telling the media the other day he hasn't had "any discussions with the Galaxy" and his "focus is on Gold Cup with Honduras" and all talks about a contract will take place after the Gold Cup.
Can't wait for tomorrow's action. 2-0 US.

Hey John tell us how you really feel.

I look forward to seeing Pavon against Guadeloupe and, assuming they advance, against the winner of Mexico/Costa Rica. So far Pavon looks like he could be a good addition to any MLS team.

Hey John, why don't you make another screen name so you can agree with yourself again.

That's how you win an MLS title -- Beckhams y Pavons

Buddle was totally useless here in Toronto. I would assume TFC has picked up a chunk of his salary in order for the deal to have gone through.

First off, John, you sound like a whining Grahame Jones. And if anyone can read between the lines of what you wrote, it sounds like you are plain jealous. As a successful businesman myself, Ive come across hundreds of people like you. Friends, family, aquaintances. You all hide under some righteous talk, but what it all boils down to is sheer jealousy. Sorry, its the truth.
Jeremy, Pavon is probably overrated and his 4 goals added to that... but did you check out goals #2 and #4 from that cuba game? Those where PURE skill and the type of player LAG needs to handle all of Beckhams crosses into the box.

In my opinion and in the opinion of many, many others, Ives is the best American soccer writer, and that is why there is an average of about 20 comments in the comments section in each of his posts - because it's quality, and because he is quality. You, on the other hand, wish you knew as much as him, and therefore, you bantered on and on whiling sounding like a real jealous idiot.

nice write-up but i still think you should just be bigger than Amado and let it go after the last thing you wrote about him...you wrote what you wrote and the majority of us sided with you, so no need for continued indirect shows, in my opinion.

John,
I already have the Ives G and Steve Goff blow up dolls. Now, I'm saving my money for Lexi Lalas blow up doll. It's much more expensive because of the over-inflated head and ego.

Xavier is only making $156? I feel sorry for the guy. ;-]

Is this THE Carlos Pavon, the Pride of Honduras, from the 1990s? I think he played in Argentina then. That Carlos Pavon was pretty good, I recall, but that was a while back.
Posted by: sheena | June 22, 2007 at 12:28 PM
Carlos pavon is simply the best striker ever in central america and alex this is not the guy who played in argentina that guy is balin bennet. There is another guy called david suazo (actually the best striker ever in concacaf according o medias) honduran also, playing soon for the inter of milan but to tell you the truth, pavon has done way much more for his national team thn david, david sucks when he is called to joined the honduran national team,he mysteriously gets injured always. At his 27 years of age (david) pavon did way much more then this barbie player. Pavon is the best thing galaxy can has guys, a honduran is telling you this.
