The Kansas City Wizards are for real. Yes, they may have gotten some help from an overzealous referee on Saturday but still did their part to thrash the Red Bulls and move into first place in the Eastern Conference.
Now we will find out whether the Wizards can keep it going without top scorer and hat-trick master Eddie Johnson. At least KC won't be alone in losing players to the Gold Cup, though the Red Bulls and DC United are poised to take advantage of not losing any players to the tournament.
So here they are, the new SBI MLS Rankings
- Kansas City Wizards (6-2-1)- Eddie Johnson is getting all the credit but the Wizards midfield is the key to their success.
- New York Red Bulls (5-2-2)- Losing players to injury and bogus red cards too much for Red Bulls to overcome.
- New England Revolution (5-2-3)- Were Revs players looking ahead to Gold Cup in snoozer vs. Real Salt Lake?
- DC United (3-3-2)- Have quietly gone unbeaten in five matches (3-0-2), but good test awaits Sunday vs. Red Bulls.
- Toronto FC (3-5-1)- It may surprise you to see them this high but 3-1-1 in five matches is tough to ignore.
- Colorado Rapids (4-3-1)- Bouna Coundoul looking like a star, but the team's talent isn't translating to consistent play.
- FC Dallas (5-5-1)- Lost second straight and will now lose Carlos Ruiz. Don't be surprised if the Hoops play better without him.
- Chivas USA (3-3-2)- Still waiting for midfield reinforcements to arrive.
- Chicago Fire (4-4-2)- Could WIllian Oliveira provide the spark the Fire has lacked this season?
- Houston Dynamo (3-5-1)- Here's an interesting fact: Houston is unbeaten vs. the West (3-0-1).
- LA Galaxy (1-3-3)- How will this group respond to losing Landon Donovan?
- Columbus Crew (1-3-5)- Winless in five and the rest of the East is pulling away
- Real Salt Lake (0-3-6)- Vancouver White Caps might bump RSL out of the top 13 if they don't win a game soon.
New England in a "snoozer vs. Real Salt Lake"? Clearly you did not watch the game.

David beat me to it. Revs were knocking on the door all day and couldn't buy a goal.

since fighting back to tie us, RSL's had 4 straight games on the road and only lost once.
i know they haven't won any of them either, but i think they deserve a little more credit..

Ives, I have a Gold Cup question. Can you provide some information on the scheduling of the event over the last 15 years (1991, 1993, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2007, ??)and advise whether CONCACAF has plans to hold it consistently in odd number years going forward and stay away from World Cup years?

Should answer the past scheduling question. As for the future, I'm sure Jack Warner would say that it all depends on how much it's worth to you...
