New Earthquakes select first 10 players
The expansion San Jose Earthquakes took their first steps toward fielding a team on Wednesday after selecting 10 players in the MLS expansion draft.
Here are the selections:
Player, former club
- Ivan Guerrero- Chicago
- Jason Hernandez - Chivas USA
- Chris Pozniak-Toronto FC
- Ned Grabavoy- Columbus
- Brian Carroll - DC United
- Clarence Goodson -FC Dallas
- Ryan Cochrane- Houston
- Gavin Glinton- Los Angeles
- Joe Vide- NY Red Bulls
- James Riley - NE Revolution
Not too many real surprises on this list. Jason Hernandez was a bit surprising but he is an underrated player who provides steady defense at a good price. I am still trying to figure out why FC Dallas left Clarence Goodson exposed. I thought it might be because he's out of contract but for San Jose to select him tells me they expect him to stick around. I thought he was FC Dallas' best defender for a chunk of the season. I wonder what happened there.
Red Bulls fans will be sad to see Joe Vide go, and they should be. He was a tenacious defensive midfielder who had his flaws but will still be a good value for San Jose next year.
I will offer my detailed breakdown of these picks later. For now, share your thoughts on these picks below. What pick surprised you the most? What pick hurt the most? What pick made you laugh?
Fire way.
Vide hustles, but is a god awful passer. Sorry to lose him, but better he than Woly or Doe.

R.I.P. Joe.

Why the hell would they not take Onstad?

How did I know that Colorado and RSL wouldn't have anyone picked?
Oh yeah, b/c both teams are garbage.

I think Yallop picked players that round out the depth chart for San Jose.
Likewise he picked players that hurt all of the other teams - depth wise.
Ex. RedBulls got good utility out of Vide. Revs got good service from Riley. And Caroll was a hard working dmid before injuries and general funk.

Onstad is old, man. They probably figure you go young and get him for the future. At 39, Onstad isn't going to be playing too much longer.

Defo sad to see Poz go, great player, always tried hard, good for him tho. Also wondering whether it means that CA/US players will be the same (no SIs for Can players) as im not sure hes worth a SI slot (compared to some other talent).

PS Poz is pretty good utility player in Mid and Defence...

Why are there 11 players on your 10 player list?
Posted by: Pez | November 21, 2007 at 01:59 PM
Loosing Wells - who was the keeper of the future, and made sure that if Pat Onstad went down there wouldn't be a sudden problem at goal for Houston- hurts. Especially since Pat seems to be the Canadian Nat's keeper of choice since Sutton has the injury bug AND I have trouble seeing anybody playing in all 50-70 games the Dynamo will be playing in next year. Jordon James isn't bad- he's just a Dev player through and through. I'm not sure we could have spared Cochrane either (would have left us with 4 starters and only Mulrooney as a ready-to-go replacement) but now we're 1-deep at keeper with no real successor for Pat, who doesn't have too many more years left in him.
Great pickup for SJ though, it's nice that he'll get to start but I'm still sad it's at such a cost.

Your list is 11 players i think your informant is bad, Insider's list is a bit different.
has cockran for Wells and no Burciaga.

Decent picks IMO.
With a couple of shrewd moves/pick ups this team can be a real thorn in the side of many times.
The problem will be depth of course. A few injuries, and a bad SI signing and bam...

Joe Vide - we loved your hustle this year. Thanks and good luck in SJ!
I think they picked a solid 10. I'm surprised, though, that they didn't go for Dorman from NE...
And - hey- there are indeed 11 players up there. Who didn't get picked?

Hm, Pozniak over everyone from Colorado? I know the Crapids are terrible, but they left a few serviceable players unprotected. I guess high salaries had something to do with it.

Whoops, looks like the list changed after I looked at it.

I think it was foolish for Yallop not to take a GK (at least a back-up). As RBNY has proven, finding a decent keeper in this league isn't so easy anymore. Should've taken a flier on Wells, Burpo, or Cronin.
In the meantime, looks like he is stocking up on mediocre center backs and D-midfielders.

You say "First on SBI" but Goff posted the list at 1:32.

My bad folks, forgot to delete some names.
And when I wrote (First on SBI) I didn't see it anywhere else.
Posted by: Ives | November 21, 2007 at 02:04 PM
That is 11 players and there were only 10 rounds. I wouldn't who didn't actually get picked.

JLO, you say you are from the block, but we all know you aren't.
Ives, does Vide's salary stay at $12,900? How does that work?
Posted by: Mikemike | November 21, 2007 at 02:06 PM
I'm sad to see Vide go. Ives, any clue if RB might consider sending a draft pick to SJ in order to bring him back?
I think it's important to have that sort of "motor" guy around for energy as much as actual on-field result.

Looks like Yallop has the beginnings of a pretty fair backline by taking Goodson (FCD), Riley (NE), Cochrane (HOU) and Burciaga (KC). Carrol, Vide (NYRB), Grabavoy (COL) and Guerrero (CHI) in midfield isn't a bad start either.
Forwards, however, oy...

Sad to see Vide go. He played with heart, he is always welcome at GS and future RBP.
Posted by: MasterShake | November 21, 2007 at 02:09 PM
Any idea why he didn't take Burciaga? Ives's first list had him on there but he isn't on there now. Seems like he should have definitely been picked.
