Red Bulls losing first round pick in Osorio deal
If you are a Red Bulls fan who was working on your draft board ahead of next month's MLS Draft, you can erase the first round.
The Red Bulls will be surrendering their first round pick, No. 7 overall, in the Juan Carlos Osorio compensation package. That gives Chicago the No. 7 and No. 12 picks in what is expected to be a deep draft.
Neither team is revealing the exact details of the package, but a source from one of the teams revealed that the Red Bulls did surrender their first-round pick. That means the Red Bulls' highest pick in next month's draft will be pick number 16, the second pick in the second round, which the team received from Toronto in the Marvell Wynne deal.
As soon as I get any more details on the compensation package I will pass them along. Don't hold your breath though. We may never know the actual cash portion of the package.
That's tough; I hope JCO is worth it. I care less about the cash and more about the picks and salary cap allocation money.

Yeah, hopefully they didn't give up a ton of allocation money...

That's okay, we'll take Matt Kassel with our Pre-emptive Round Zero pick.

Haig, assuming he comes out.
This really pisses me off. Couldn't gotten a good defender at 7.

The draft is becoming more irrelevant every year. The allocation money is the major thing to worry about.
Speaking of Kassel, who doesn't need to enter the draft and should be signed by NYRB off its academy soon, here's a story I just came across while doing research for something else...

Fire fans can finally stop their crying and whining, that is a hefty price.
They should go after Armas as coach, he's got a great brain inside that noggin.

Red Bull fans must be happy that their owners have really deep pockets and are deeply invested in the success of the franchise because from an outsiders point of view their moves and willingness to "splash the cash" looks almost reckless..
I really hope there is a stragegy or long term plan or else they will not realize the return on the investment as the fans still will not come of the product on the pitch is crap...regardless of how nice the stadium is.

I don't know how much value I put on a 1st round draft choice. The Fire will probably pick another project player like Bakari

Draft picks are magic beans at best. That is hardly a hefty price. In the original story dealing for magic beans got Jack beaten around the head and shoulders. Its a smiley to hear a RB fan complaining. Gack. I hope there is a golden egg goose load of money in the deal as well. Ives, did your earlier post imply that the compensation was negotiated before RB was permitted to meet JCO?

The club that drafted Steve Shak with an overall number one pick is now gonna sweat giving up first round picks? (as an aside, wasn't JCO part of the staff the year of that debacle?)

we got dane "i cant cross but i'm really fast" richards in the 2nd round last year so maybe it wont be so bad. also the clint mathis trade for a 3rd round pick is making more sense since the red bulls want to have some new players in the reserves since theres such a high turn over because of the crappy salaries.....

Hi Ives, got a question.
Why is it such a big deal to know the details of the agreement between MLS teams or even how the allocations are organized? I just don't get it. Sounds foolish.

there are rumors on the Red Card that the allocation money is $150K. That's the only part of the deal I care about. If that's the case, enjoy the rent-a-coach RBNY fans.
Draft picks 8/10 are fairly worthless so they are rarely any kind of consolation prize.

I have checked this out and I now understand why Osorio wanted to make the move. It is perfectly clear that he made the move to be closer to his ailing relative back home and just wanted to be closer.
As it turns out Chicago is 2,005 miles away from Colombia and New York is only 1,942 miles away.
It makes perfect sense now.

Real bad feeling about BA.
Real bad feeling about this.
Sigh.

This hurts. I have to say I think it was a waste of a 1st round draft pick in a draft that is looking particularly deep in defenders. I hope they can get somebody good at 16, because they could definitely have gotten a good player at 7.
At the end of the day, what's the point of giving up allocation or draft money for a coach when there are so many qualified, talented coaches available in the world??
This isn't as big of a bet as Bruce trading Amado for a DP slot (that he would then waste on Reyna), but this is a bet was made unnecessarily.

The truth is JCO came to Chicago right when the Fire got Blanco and when some key players were coming back from injuries. It's all hype. He's probably better than the average MLS coach, but don't expect miracles. Many great coaches have failed in NY and I don't expect JCO to be any different.

It not enough.
Usualy the penalty for most crimes is stiffer on the second offense!
