Red Bulls to open 2008 season at San Jose

(Seen First on SBI)

Red Bulls fans, you can start making your plans for the start of the 2008 MLS season. The Red Bulls will open the season on the road against the expansion San Jose Earthquakes on March 29th at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, California. The match will be the Red Bulls' first chance to see former teammate Joe Vide, who is projecting to be a starting central midfielder for San Jose.

Since NO Red Bulls fans will be making that road trip (Okay, make that some since at least a few Red Bulls fans go everywhere), those who can't get to San Jose will only have to wait a week to see the Red Bulls in person. The Red Bulls will play host to the Columbus Crew at Giants Stadium on April 5th.

The rest of the league's opening schedule will be released on Tuesday so check back here tomorrow for more information.

Isn't this the third year in a row that RBNY has opened the season on the road? WTF?

The Revenge of Joe Vide!

A challenge eh? Do we get anything if we show up? Other than being allowed to say "neener neener?"

okay, so who's planning this? Binks?

Love SBI Exclusive label...hope those whiners don't go after you like last time!

Cool!

But I'd bet this game will be at the Oakland Coliseum rather than Buck Shaw. Apparently four games will be at the bigger (and closer to my house by 30 miles) venue. Figure a couple of Beckham games there, the opener and maybe we'll get a Nats double header of some kind.

Anyway, that's my speculation.

Too bad LA's not here for the home opener.

Btw, Ives, when are you gonna put up the Yanks Abroad Weekly Update? I'm waiting anxiously.

- This is from 'Some light reading on the U.S. Under-23 National Team': "Good afternoon folks. A few SBI updates for you. I won't be doing Americans Abroad today (Fulham plays today so I'll just wait a day)"

So I guess we'll have to wait until tomorrow.

Oh, okay. Thanks dude.

Reyna will be here next season, and will have to school his padawa Joe Vide.

*crossing fingers*

NY's first game is against Yallop and the Earthquakes?

Oh this will be funny. >:D

6 points out of the first 2 games. Thank you.

Dude you guys are going to get killed in the first game

So, will Cappello get fired after he loses to the Quakes?

The 4 McAfee Coliseum games will probably be twice versus the L.A. Beckhams, one versus the Chicago Club Americas con Blanco, and one versus the Artists Formerly Known as the San Jose Earthquakes aka Houston Dynamo (this one could be a doubleheader from what I've been told)

Moving to Japan in February, but must start searching for flights from Nagoya to San Jose right now...

Roehl, american airlines used to have non-stop from Narita to San Jose twice daily, but that was back in 1997, don't know if they still do

I would be surprised, though, if NY-LA at Giants Stadium on opening day, on national broadcast television, wasn't on the minds of the schedule makers at MLS.

Voo,

Just looked at flights now. I'll have to check my bank account in March, see if I can't lay down a grand just for the flight.

Yeah, who needs to pay off students loans when you can raise the Metro banner in hostile territory?

It's excellent that neither LA nor Houston was selected as the San Jose Earthquakes' first opponent at home in 2008.

The first home meeting with either of those two teams will be a sellout or a near-sellout (considering that it'll likely be played at McAfee Coliseum) anyway, so why waste a Home Opener that'll sell out REGARDLESS of who the visiting opponent is on either of them?

Red Bull New York is a good choice as the first visiting opponent since the Earthquakes will have a better chance to beat them or at least play a pretty close game with them. Even more importantly, RBNY emits no emotional resonance for Quakes fans (unlike LA and Houston), thus allowing the Return of the San Jose Earthquakes to be THE story of the Home Opener without ANYTHING else overshadowing it.

I'm confused, why won't any NYRB fans make the trip out to San Jose? Afterall, I know of several TFC Supporters already planning for a trip to San Jose.

actually few of us already planning that march 29th trip..so we will be there ...not the first time .

So in other words Goodsport, it's a good thing the Red Bulls are the opener because otherwise who the hell would pay to see them?

Those complaining about not haveing the opening game at GS should re-think a little bit. Do you really want to see the players getting hypothermia again? Its cold enough in April, let alone late March. I know I would rather wait the week and potentialy have better weather.

Justin: nope, I'm saying that it's a good thing the Earthquakes' home opener is against a tea, other than LA or Houston, so that the story and buzz will only be about the Return of the San Jose Earthquakes, without anything else (in the case of LA, the intrastate rivalry, the first visit by Golden Balls and the return of Baby Judas; in Houston's case, the return of the former franchise that should've never have been moved in the first place) overshadowing it.
