Man at the Mall: Closter Plaza

This 1960's shopping center is a throwback to the old, open-air malls. From it's kitchy, retro-looking sign on Closter Dock Road, Closter Plaza boats a nice selection of chains stores and smaller, independently owned stores.

The main anchor is a free-standing K-Mart. This is one of my favorite K-Mart's in the area. It is more along the lines of a neighborhood K-Mart, instead of the highway K-Marts, like in Paramus and Elmwood Park.

The other anchor was Stop & Shop, but recently closed 3 months ago. There is still yet a tenant to move into the location. Some of the other chain stores in the center include; Dollar Tree, Radio Shack, Moto-Photo, Curves For Women, Harmon Discount, PNC Bank, Hollywood Tans, Rockaway Bedding, which is having a Going Out of Business sale and new to the Bergen County retail scene, Massage Envy.

Some of the smaller, independently owned stores include; Bobbi's Golden Hanger, a tween boutique, Northern Valley Opticians, Closter Plaza Art & Framing, Homewares, Threads, a women's boutique, Vincent's Custom Tailor & Tuxedo, Closter Plaza Pet World, Greetings From Closter, a Hallmark Card store, Callahan Jewelers, Closter Health Food Store, Perfume Boutique, Theo's Parties, which took over the old Sandy's Deck Party location and Xocolat Corner.

Closter Plaza also has a few eateries scattered throughout and there is a Burger King located behind the center. Rudy's Ristorante & Pizzeria, which was recently featured in 201 magazine's Best of Bergen edition, took home the award for "Best Slice of Pizza." I have been to Rudy's a handful of times and the pizza is worthy of the title. The other eateries are; Sushi Plaza, Closter #1, chinese take-out, Closter Hot Bagels and Yogurt Lovers, an ice cream place.

There is a Clearview Cinemas located next to Theo's Parties at the end of the center. The theatre features four, nice sized auditoriums.

Tell us what you think: What would you like to see replace the old Stop & Shop?

I want a Rag Shop in the old Stop n Shop!!!!!!!

I heard it is going to be either an asian supermarket or a Wholefoods. I would be that the Wholefoods rumor developed as a result of wishful thinking though.

Also, there's no chance of a Rag Shop. They're all going out of business.

Who can I contact in regards to the vacant Stop & Shop space? Please inform.

Also, who owns the Closter Plaza? Individual or a group or the town?

It should be a Trader Joe's.

anything but a nail salon (there are 21 in closter) or a korean BBQ. if something great comes, other stores will follow. The taxes are very high in closter, yet we must shop elsewhere.

The owner of Closter Plaza is listed as Aspi Irani C/O Closter Plaza Management at 20 W Clinton Ave in Tenafly (which is the Friedberg Properties office, so they might manage Closter Plaza). They can be contacted at either 201-894-1234 or tenafly@friedbergproperties.com

they should put another supermarket. i mean they have the shelves and stuff still in it. im voting wholefoods. Whos with me?????

According to Whole Foods' quarterly report, a lease has been signed for a store in Closter. See it here:

(search "Closter")

I got this on another forum here (http://njmg.typepad.com/foodblog/2008/05/whole-foods-in.html)
