Route 46 corridor appears to be doing healthy biz.
I ended up at Willowbrook Mall in Wayne. I passed the Best Buy on Route 46 West - there's a line of cars waiting to get in that spills out onto the highway by about six cars. Toys R Us and Circuit City also had short lines to get in and full parking lots. That's all I've got on that one, readers. I love you, but when the risk of a fender-bender is that high, love just ain't enough. Suffice it to say that it is busy, and there will be lots of people, and little parking.
Willowbrook is also crowded in the parking lot. Come if you are comfortable stalking emerging shoppers to their car and don't mind their suspicious backwards gazes. Oh, and eat beforehand. The food court is packed.
I talked to a group of ladies from Paterson who started their shopping day at 3:45 a.m. in the Riverdale Wal-Mart to scoop up some televisions and laptops, and then came to Willowbrook to shop for clothes. They were headed to Best Buy next. While they sat on a bench and rested, surrounded by bags of clothing from stores such as Macy's, I asked why they braved the Black Friday mayhem.
"I think it's the rush of the deals, the excitement," said Shavonne Crowell, 35.
It is kind of neat to see everyone so excited. But I think I'm reaching the tipping point of my own sanity. I saved some of the good stuff for the paper, so make sure you check it out in tomorrow's Record.
And drive carefully - a lot of folks on the road have been awake way too long.
