Shockey here, Awasom gone
Jeremy Shockey decided after all to attend Sunday's Super Bowl XLII, and arrived in town today. Shockey still is on crutches after his operation to repair a broken fibula suffered in the Dec. 16 loss to Washington.
The Giants have not determined whether Shockey will stand on the sidelines, where he could be in jeopardy because of his limited mobility; or sit in the stands, where he could be in jeopardy if he opens his mouth too often. The tight end's mother also will attend the game.
Shockey had said he would not attend the game because he did not want to be a distraction to the team, nor did he want to stand too long on those crutches. With media availability long past, however, Shockey can just be a silent observer.
The other injured reserve players arrived Thursday on the family charter. But it didn't take long for DE Adrian Awasom to head home. He was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving by Arizona state police early Friday.
An officer with the Arizona Department of Public Safety stopped Awasom's vehicle at about 3 a.m. on Interstate 10 in Phoenix, according to a police spokesman.
Blood test results aren't yet available, but Awasom was cited on suspicion of driving under the influence and extreme DUI. The Giants said they are aware of the situation but have no comment, other than to confirm Awasom no longer is in Arizona.
DE Osi Umenyiora (thigh) joined WR Plaxico Burress (ankle, knee) on the sidelines for Friday's practice. Umenyiora is listed as probable and Burress as questionable for Sunday's game, but you can bet your mortgage both will be on the field.
"He's improved," Tom Coughlin said of Burress, who did take a few turns during the individual drills."He's done it all year under all kinds of circumstances. We've just got to be hopeful he can do it one more time."
The Giants will have a walk-through Saturday at the Cardinals facility before teeing it up Sunday.
