For those Giants fans worried the team actually might trade Jeremy Shockey, or that Shockey might sit out the season (I have a bridge for sale if you believe that one), take heart in knowing Darcy Johnson is fully recovered from the knee injury that sat him for all of last season.
Johnson is up to 270 pounds and always was a good blocker. And apparently he is experiencing no discomfort from the knee.
So there, problem solved. Kevin Boss, Johnson, Michael Matthews _ who needs Shockey?
The answer: the Giants, and they would be silly to think otherwise. They won the Super Bowl despite averaging just 3.5 yards per carry in the post-season compared to the 4.4 they averaged in the 14 games Shockey played during the regular season. He still is a factor in the short-to-medium passing game and ALWAYS draws double coverage once the Giants get into their opponent's territory.
While the Giants may be kidding themselves if they think they are better off without Shockey (and few if any in the organization really think that way), Sean Payton also is kidding himself if he thinks he will be getting the same Shockey he coached as a rookie back in 2002. And Shockey is kidding himself if he thinks a sudden move to New Orleans will recapture that form. His numerous leg injuries have all but eliminated that possibility.
