No shock here: Saints back off
New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis admitted Thursday he's no longer in pursuit of a deal for Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey, citing the Giants' trade demands. Prior to the draft, the Giants reportedly had asked for a second-round pick and safety Roman Harper.
“It’s no secret we had some discussions with them and we just couldn’t come to a conclusion on the right compensation,” Loomis told Sirius NFL Radio. “I understand that. He's a very good player and the Giants don't want to just give him away - unless they feel like they're getting really good value.
“But for the most part that’s dead ... I don't anticipate that being rekindled.”
The Giants, meanwhile, huddled with free agent defensive end Renaldo Wynn on Wednesday. A source said the veteran, who played with the Saints last season, had a "good visit," but no deal was reached. Wynn played for coach Tom Coughlin while they were with the Jacksonville Jaguars from 1997-2001.
Wise move by the Giants not trade Shockey. I think it will pay off in the long run this season. Shockey will help Boss develope into the TE position and will be another weapon on the offense. With the pickup of Phillips in the draft this trade was dead unless the Saints made a trade to good to turn down.
