The best postcard from Tuesday's workout would have been one of FB Madison Hedgecock lying on his stomach.
Hedgecock, who has carried twice in his three NFL seasons and no times in 15 games last year with the Giants, was given a rare opportunity with the ball. He popped a quick handoff from Eli Manning and roared into the secondary, made one little move and appeared off the the races.
And then he slipped and fell right on his tummy. Hedgecock got up, and slammed the ball to the turf as his teammates enjoyed a chuckle.
WRs Amani Toomer (swelling in left leg) and Steve Smith (soreness) joined Plaxico Burress (ankle) and David Tyree (knee) on the sideline. With rookie Mario Manningham (thigh) seeing limited action, the Giants were down to six receivers for most of the practice.
Sinorice Moss and Domenik Hixon worked with the first team, Brandon London and Michael Jennings with the second team. and D.J. Hall and Craphonso Thorpe with the third team.
Shane Olivea moved up to second team right tackle as Adam Koets sat out the practice. "Something overnight," said coach Tom Coughlin. "He was dizzy when he got up today, so we have to watch him.
David Carr threw the lone interception of the workout, right into the hands of SS Sammy Knight. "It's going to take time with him," Coughlin said of the former Houston quarterback who was participating in just his second workout. "But we've got time, we're in camp."
The practice ended with a live goal-line drill, using the 10-yard line as the goal line. The first and second units each got three tries to get into the end zone.
It took the first team three runs to get Brandon Jacobs home vs. the No. 1 defense. It took the second team two tries to get Derrick Ward into the end zone against the second unit.
Rookie S Terrance Stringer missed the practice with a sore hamstring. Last time a fringe rookie missed a practice, DT Nate Robinson, he was waived-injured the next day.
The Giants had safety Craig Dahl, who made the team last year before getting injured, in for a look the other day and may be close to re-signing him.
With the strict 80-man roster teams around the league are quickly waiving injured players who are long shots to make the team with the notation of injury. They simply need the roster spot, and fill it with a healthy body as soon as possible. In the past, when teams had some 87 to 88 players in camp thanks the NFL Europe exemptions, free agent rookies usually were given a chance to heal since the roster spot was not as important.
