Coach Tom Coughlin says the orthotics WR Plaxico Burress has been wearing for more than a week have helped his sore ankle and the Giants medical staff is optimistic Burress actually may get onto the practice field in the near future.
"Hopefully we'll get something done," Coughlin said. "I've talked to Plax and shown him our schedule. He knows how much time we have left and agrees we don;t want to break camp without him getting anything done here. I'm hopeful, I'm hopeful."
Rookie Kenny Phillips was sharing time with Michael Johnson on the first defensive unit. Coughlin continues to praise the work of the No. 1 draft pick.
There still is no verdict on the status of Jonathan Goff (broken transverse process), although Coughlin said the fifth-round draft pick will be sidelined for quite awhile. Danny Clark took some snaps in the middle with the third defense.
James Butler (off David Carr) and Sammy Knight (off Antony Wright) had interceptions in the afternoon workout.
Coughlin said he was not particularly pleased with the offensive intensity in the practice. He says the only way to improve that intensity is through better execution.
"The offense and the defense are two different animals," he said. "The defense by nature in aggressive while the offense is methodical. We need to have our execution better on offense to move forward."
Rookie QB Andre Woodson did take the offense 46 yards in less than 54 seconds for a TD in his first chance running the two-minutes offense. The TD came on an 11-yard pass to Brandon London over CB Sam Madison.
The embarrassing moment of the afternoon came when 198-pound Ahmad Bradshaw ran into 310-pound Rich Seubert, knocking Seubert right on his keister to the delight of his teammates.
Also out of practice were WR Mario Manningham (thigh), OT Shane Olivea (back), S Nehemiah Warrick (knee), CB Darren Barnett (ankle), TE Eric Butler (ankle), DE Wallace Gilberry (ankle) and DE Robert Henderson (ankle). DE Dave Tollefson was excused to be with his wife, who was giving birth to their first child. WR Steve Smith (groin) returned to work.
