Wrestling: D4 finals

They're cleaning up the gym here at West Milford and I need to file a story but here are the results of the championship round for District 4.

The Most Outstanding Wrestler was DePaul senior Trevor Melde who won his fourth district title, as did Lakeland senior Colton Chalkley.

The District 4 coach of the year is Scott Mahoney after his Pompton Lakes squad won its first-ever team district title (more on that in later post after I file my story).

103 - 1. Ryan Murphy (West Milford) decisioned 2. Jeff Nichols (Wayne Valley), 5-1. Note: Murphy was a district runner-up last year while Nichols had finished third.

112 - 1. Evan Lodder (Pompton Lakes) decisioned 2. Luke Maroldi (Kinnelon), 3-2. Note: Lodder won his second straight district title.

119 - 1. Clint Donnelly (Kinnelon) major decision 7. Matt Smith (Lakeland), 14-5. Note: Smith had as good a tournament as anybody, pinning second-seeded Andrew Polidore of Wayne Hills in 3:04 in the quarterfinals. Only Donnelly's last-second takedown turned this into a major decision.

125 - 1. Colton Chalkley (Lakeland) major decision 2. Evan Poole (West Milford), 16-2. Note: Chalkley's goal since eighth grade, or at least one of them, was to win four district titles.

130 - 1. Luke Rigoglioso (Wayne Valley) pinned 2. Taylor Pevny (West Milford), 3:01. Note: This is Rigoglioso's third straight district title and he's been a very motivated wrestler since he was upset in the Passaic County Tournament final, 9-6, by Passaic Valley junior Andrew Greco.

135 - 1. Jude Tropona (Pequannock) pinned 3. Ryan McEwan (Wayne Valley), 1:31. Note: The championship round started with this bout.

140 - 1. Trevor Melde (DePaul) pinned No. 2 Nick Ponomarev (Pequannock), 3:13. Note: Melde won three district titles at Delbarton; Ponomarev was a two-time returning district champion.

145 - 1. Nick Maroldi (Kinnelon) decisioned 2. Clay VanDenBerg (West Milford), 3-0.

152 - Kevin Stasiak (Pequannock) pinned 2. Tim Kennedy (Kinnelon), 4:55.

160 - 1. Josh Arnau (Pequannock) pinned 2. Farzan Taschayyodi (Wayne Valley), 1:15. Note: Major upset, I correctly typed Taschayyodi's name all day (see my preview post from Thursday). However, I just misspelled "typed," and had to correct that. Go figure.

171 - 1. Rob Grimal (Pompton Lakes) pinned 6. Doug Denequolo (Pequannock), :55.

189 - 2. Matt Grosser (Pompton Lakes) decisioned 1. A.J. Mott (DePaul), 4-3. Note: Mott was as angry as I've seen a wrestler this season. And wrestlers are known for some good post-bout emotion.

215 - 1. Mike Landberg (Wayne Valley) decisioned Billy Haug (Kinnelon), 2-1 in double overtime. Note: Curious decision by Haug to deliberately give Landberg the winning point at the start of the second overtime period, rather than allow Landberg to start in the defensive position.

285 - 1. Luke Ramsey (West Milford) pinned 2. Emrah Akil (Wayyne Vallley), 3:39. Note: Rematch of the Passaic County final, also won by Ramsey by pin.
