Spent the afternoon up in West Milford for the Highlanders girls soccer game with Wayne Hills. Hope you saw some of the reports on Twitter.
Today looked like a good match-up, West Milford had been playing very well in its last 5 games while Wayne Hills was coming off a loss to DePaul on Monday night. DePaul is good....but still, the Patriots are the top seed in the county, so any county loss was bound to draw some attention.
But today it was all Patriots. They scored early -- two minutes in -- and the wind just never seemed to bother them like it did the Highlanders. Wayne Hills won 4-0 and did it without standout freshman midfielder Nickolette Driesse who got nicked up in the DePaul loss.
On the other side, West Milford just started flat, played well at the end of the 1st half, but really had some bad defensive breakdowns.
That said, the county quarterfinals look very interesting. Wayne Hills plays defending champ Lakeland Saturday, West Milford goes to Clifton, Eastern Christians hosts Pompton Lakes and on Friday DePaul goes across town to face Wayne Valley in what is sure to be a good one. (I am planning to attend).
But right now, who is to say who the best team is? Wayne Hills loses to DePaul. DePaul has tied Wayne Valley, Clifton and Eastern Christian. Eastern Christian hasn't lost to anyone. Lakeland beats Wayne Valley, but has had some bad losses. Clifton has been pretty consistent....but they just got by West Milford the first time around. We should have more on this tomorrow on Aces.
Aces, by the way, which will be getting a whole new look pretty soon.
Oh, and there will be video highlights from the Wayne Hills-West Milford game available on northjersey.com by Thursday.
It was a busy week for gymnastics too last week. I took in 2 meets. The best was (again) up in West Milford where Passaic Valley just got by the Highlanders. Bergen County is pretty much set, Pascack is the best team, and probably the best team in the state, but small Passaic County, with its 5 teams is too close to call right now. Passaic Valley has been scoring in the low 100s, so has West Milford, and now, Wayne Hills came out of the pack and put up a 102 on Monday. That's a huge number. It could be a real 3 way battle for the county title at the end of the month.
