Be very careful, Don Bosco fans, because this much is clear after spending a half a day here in Alabama preparing for Friday night's showdown: the Prattville Lions are lying in wait and waiting to pounce.
Look, Prattville may not have the national ranking, but it does have tremendous tradition. There will be a packed stadium of 13,000 fans rooting against the Ironmen, who have not played since Sept. 12 -- when, I might add, a majority of the 8,600 fans were cheering for them.
Prattville is fast and runs a spread very similar to the one employed by Don Bosco on offense, which should help the Lions in preparation for the Ironmen. The Lions have a quarterback in LSU-bound Sam Gibson, whom the Bosco coaches compare to former St. Peter's stud Will Hill with his ability to keep defenses honest with his arm and keep coordinators up at night with his legs.
Prattville (3-1) also has a talented safety in Nick Perry, who has already committed to Alabama. This community is so juiced up for this game, the best example of this being the scene that played out as Don Bosco finished up its walkthrough at Stanley-Jensen Stadium.
Three pick-up trucks stopped in front of the stadium with the sounds of "Sweet Home Alabama" blaring from their radios. All three did so simultaneously, and Bosco definitely took notice.
Also, say what you want about the humidity in Jersey, but those insisting it will be a factor down here were not kidding. It was like pea soup earlier this afternoon -- you just felt the difference, and when the sun came out inside Stanley-Jensen, the temps certainly made it feel like July. Now consider Bosco is playing just its second game, while Prattville is prepping for Game No. 5, you get the picture.
The biggest key to the game, in my opinion, with be Prattville's offensive front against Don Bosco's defensive front. The Ironmen are good in the secondary, but Gibson can't be given time to do his thing.
Don Bosco's got to play better offensively in this one than it did against De La Salle. I know, that may sound silly for a team that scored 30 points, but many of those came on a short field.
More to come on Friday.
