With the Yankees temporarily tied atop the wild card (and who thought we'd be saying that the last time we were here in Toronto), here's a few items from today.
Waite Hoyt (pictured, left) has company, as Andy Pettitte joined him for 8th all-time on the Yankees win list (157). Melky Cabrera has a 12-game hitting streak, and he's staying in center. Jason Giambi is in town, but he might not be activated for a few days.
That gives them a little time to either deal Miguel Cairo, or reluctantly option Shelley Duncan to Scranton (which I don't think will happen). Johnny Damon is at risk to join the role player ranks, if he isn't there yet.
"He's been amazing this year,'' Damon said of Melky. Damon was probably speaking for himself when he said, "we are very fresh right now,'' and he also mentioned that "Jeter and Rodriguez are going to be doing some DH days also,'' alluding to the revolving door to come at DH.
Damon can't be happy about this. But he's on Cloud 9 compared with Farnsworth, who is about to be big-time buried by Joba Chamberlain, who should be in uniform by game time Tuesday night. Let the Joba Era begin.
Why must Giambi be activated, or someone else lose their job because of him? He can't play the field, and he can't hit anymore. The years of steroids have caught up to him. Eat his contract (easy for me to say), and dump this useless waste.

I have to agree. While a lot of factors have gone into it, the Yankees have played TONS better without Giambi. He slows things down so much, at a time when their power AND SPEED are coming along. (If he raced a pregnant woman, he'd come in 3rd!)
Anyway, let's get in 1st and stay there...then see if we can peck away at the Red Sox lead. We're not done in the East just yet.

Joba looked great in his inning. That slider could be dominating. I love that he had the confidence to throw it with a full count. I think this kid is going to be great.
As for Melky, he has definitely proved he deserves an everyday spot in the lineup. Damon can't play center anymore.
