Camping (and chilling) out
Nobody wants to hear how cold it is in Florida. But it's my duty to report that 42-degree temps (wind chill in the 30s) had the Yankees bundled against the elements today during a brief workout session - mainly batting practice, infield, and pitchers' fielding drills. Mitigating factor: it was sunny. Warming up to 72 tomorrow.
With the exhibition schedule upon us, some of the "boot camp'' element of camp will be diminished, but, "it's important to keep what we gained,'' said Girardi, who feels his club is in good shape. Really, not to have a back strain or a leg cramp so far - among this veteran group, after all that work - is quite a feat. (Austin Jackson, 21, is back on the field, after suffering a mild back strain last week in an outfield drill).
Latest odd Kei Igawa sighting: He was standing on the Legends Field mound yesterday, around 8:30 a.m., mimicking his windup. That wasn't so strange, except that after he was done, he got behind the plate and received fake pitches from his interpreter. Maybe he was simulating a break in the action.
Don't expect Mariano Rivera in a game until Wednesday, at Legends, vs. Minnesota. "I'm sure he's looking for a home game (to pitch in),'' Girardi said. "There’s no rush...he’ll be ready March 31.
Latest odd Igawa sighting - that's hilarious. Let's hope the oddities work.
Mixing in a few "fake pitches" might have been a good idea last season.
