Security? Anybody?
The Yankees' clubhouse was a giddy place last night, with a lot of punchy players eager to be heading home. They also were able to make fun of a potentially serious moment between innings, when a fan climbed out of the stands in the 8th.
This 18-year-old guy wanted to meet Derek Jeter. And nobody stopped him, until Morgan Ensberg intervened. "He was saying stuff like, 'Oh you're my favorite player,'' Ensberg said. "And I was saying, 'Hey. Okay. Now, back off.' ''
At first - since nobody stopped the guy - Jeter said he thought the fellow was an employee. Ensberg tried to shoo the guy away, without any help from security. Finally, two officers calmly escorted the guy off the field. But that was far too close for comfort.
They were able to laugh about Cleveland's lax security later. As Jeter had his post-game meal, Ensberg donned some serious dark sunglasses, and stood over the Captain, doing his best celebrity bodyguard impression.
Later, Ensberg said he was just doing it for all of Jeter's female admirers who needed to make sure their idol was safe. Jeter got a real good laugh out of that line.
