Welcome to Yankee Stadium?
In the last year of the House that Ruth Built, these Yankees might as well move next door right now. They are now 23-22 at home, having lost 7 of their last 9 games at the Stadium.
Bob Sheppard, we hear, won't be back before the All-Star Game, as his return date keeps getting pushed back. It's still strange not to hear his voice - and it brings you back when you hear his taped introduction every time Derek Jeter steps up.
And where's the old Jeter? He caught a huge break in today's ninth inning, when his RBI double was incorrectly ruled a trap by crew chief Wally Bell (Coco Crisp made the sliding catch). It should've been the third out. Instead, Bobby Abreu had a shot to hit a game-tying homer off Jon Papelbon, and flied out to the center field warning track.
Darrell Rasner? He apologized on the bench for giving up the 3-0 lead, and the game-changing three-run homer to Lowell. "I felt horrible,'' Rasner said. Rasner had escaped from a first-inning jam, getting Lowell to foul out and Youkilis to line out with the bases loaded. "I was hoping...to build off that,'' he said. "It didn't happen.''
Robbie Cano is 21-87 with RISP, .241. Overall, he's at .248. Johnny Damon left the park with his left shoulder wrapped, and admitted he wouldn't be a thought to play until Thursday at the earliest. "Definitely a sharp pain in there,'' Damon said. "If there's still a lot of pain tomorrow, that's when we can judge how serious it is.''
Today's paid attendance was 51,130 - largest crowd of the year. And 70 percent of them were gone (and a healthy chunk of Red Sox fans were left) after the 88-minute rain delay in the 8th. It's serious.
