Chien-Ming Wang appears headed to the disabled list with a right shoulder strain and "some bursitis,'' according to Joe Girardi. Rest is being prescribed, and though Wang did admit to being "very worried'' about the potential for surgery down the line, he seemed content about the medical staff's diagnosis.
This isn't the same pain he felt in '01, when he missed the year due to arthroscopic shoulder surgery, and it's not the type of pain he experienced in '05, when he missed two months due to inflammation.
Still, Wang said he believes he's going on the DL, a point made more frustrating because Wang, Girardi and Jorge Posada each thought Wang exhibited his best sinker of the year --- until he felt tightness on Lind's homer, then felt pain on his next delivery, a sinker that was 4-6 mph slower than usual.
Girardi said that Aceves and Hughes could not be ramped up to make a start of more than 45-55 pitches, so either the staff will cobble together a start on Thursday in Minneapolis, or the Yanks could call up Sergio Mitre, who is 2-1 at Class AAA Scranton with a 3.26 ERA, 23 K, 3 BB in 5 GS (30.1 IP).
I try not to repeat myself too much, but I am still waiting for any clue to why Cano is batting fifth. ANY clue. Everybody who watches the Yankees knows that he hits better in other spots in the lineup, and other hitters on the team hit better in that one. It defies rational analysis. I can only think it is psychotic perseveration on Girardi's part. I don't hate Cano and I recognize he can be very useful elsewhere. But the key word is ELSEWHERE!
