Gibbs to Pittsburgh
Ashton Gibbs has committed to Big East power Pittsburgh.
The 6-2, 185-pound junior combo guard out of Seton Hall Prep chose Pitt over Seton Hall, Virginia and Virginia Tech.
Gibbs is a 3-star recruit according to Rivals.com and is ranked No. 145 in the Rivals Top 150. Last season he led Seton Hall Prep to a 30-1 record and the Tournament of Champions semifinals, where it lost to eventual champ St. Patrick.
"I chose Pitt because of the academic tradition and the basketball teams they've had," Gibbs told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "And I had a bond with the coaches that I liked."
Gibbs said part of the reason for his choice was that former Seton Hall Prep and Pitt standout Brandin Knight is now on Jamie Dixon's staff.
"I've known Brandin since I was a little kid," Gibbs said. "We're connected through Seton Hall Prep and him being in Pittsburgh was a factor. Brandin did very well there and I want to follow in his footsteps."
Gibbs is Pitt's third recruit from the Class of 2008, joining St. Anthony point guard Travon Woodall of Paterson and small forward Nasir Robinson of Chester, Pa.
"I think I'm a combo guard, but I could play the point full time," Gibbs told CavsCorner.com. "Right now, on the AAU circuit, I'm running the point for my team and I'm getting more comfortable there."
Gibbs also talked about the aspects of his game that he is continuing to work on in anticipation of his senior season and then ultimately his journey to the college hardwood.
"I'm working on my decision-making and my explosiveness – speed and agility training mainly," he said.
