Quick Hits from Flushing
This time of year I'm busy at the U.S. Open, so I apologize for the lack of hoops news in the past day or two. Hopefully many of you are out enjoying the beach on this holiday weekend...Anyway, here are some quick hits while I wait on yet another late-night tennis match at the Open.
*While most college hoops teams have yet to hit the hardwood in earnest, Villanova is in Canada playing some exhibition games, including Sunday's win over Carleton. The team features two Jersey freshmen, former St. Ben's star Corey Stokes and former St. Pat's standout Corey Fisher.
"It was sensory overload," coach Jay Wright told the Philly Inquirer. "Their heads were spinning. They had orientation and we're practicing.
*After seeing the rosters for the Five-Star Basketball Camp All-Star Games, it reinforced the belief that Paterson Catholic and American Christian are going to be loaded going forward. PC put six players in the Development League Game, including three players with offers from Seton Hall: 6=5 Fuquan Edwin, 6-6 Trevor Clemmings and 6-5 Jayon James. Isiah Epps of Plainfield, who has also been offered by the Pirates, was also in the game.
The NBA game, meantime, featured five American Christian players: 6-0 Josh Spivey, 5-9 Ryan Davis, 6-6 Martez Walker, 5-11 Lamont "Momo" Jones and 6-3 Karron McKenzie.
U-Conn bound Kemba Walker of Rice was named Playoff MVP. Mookie Jones of Peekskill (NY), a Rutgers and Seton Hall target, was named Most Outstanding Player. And Danny Jennings of Oak Hill was named Best Rebounder.
*Finally, we highly recommend Rob Harrington's column on hoopsfuture.com entitled "The Legend of Ivan Renko." Good stuff.

I'm told nobody has called American Christian coach Tony Bergeron to offer, but the coach is confident the kid will get some. McKenzie also hasn't been in school for even a day yet.
