Devin Ebanks' prep career came to an end Tuesday night when his St. Thomas More team fell to Hargrave Military Academy, 98-75, in the quarterfinals of the National Prep Championship at Fordham's Rose Hill Gym.
Now the question is, What's next for Ebanks?
It appears unlikely that the 6-foot-9 Ebanks, who had 22 points in the Hargrave game, will attend Indiana given the recent firing of Kelvin Sampson and a handful of schools appear to be in the running for his services, including Memphis, Rutgers and Texas.
St. Thomas More head coach Jere Quinn said he planned to meet later this week with Ebanks, his mother, Yvonne Jackson and Ebanks' AAU people, including Lawrence McGugins, the head of Team Takeover.
"We're going to try and make a quick assessment of what they're trying to do," Quinn said Wednesday by phone. "We're hoping to get together soon."
Memphis has made a push with Ebanks, and Quinn said that might be an option.
"Memphis has contacted us," Quinn said. "I know they've contacted his AAU people."
As for Rutgers, Jackson has long been a fan of the program, largely because of its proximity to the family home in Long Island City and because of the family relationship with RU assistant Craig Carter.
"If he were to do something in the Big East, Rutgers is the only one he's really had communciation with," Quinn said.
Texas was also a finalist before Ebanks chose Indiana last summer and Rick Barnes' program appears to still be an option. Texas got a commitment Tuesday from 6-8 sophomore forward Tristan Thompson out of St. Benedict's Prep in Newark.
Still, Quinn added that he has been contacted by "every major conference and the question is, 'What's he doing?'"
Don't count out a school like West Virginia, which we hear is also making a big push.
RU asst. coach Craig Carter should be fired if he can't land Ebanks now. Why isn't Seton Hall in the picture with Ebanks at this point?
